CELL THEORY
CELL THEORY
• In 1655 Hooke described ‘cells in a cork.’The concept of
cells was first observed by Robert Hooke in 1665, who
used a microscope to examine cork and noticed “small
boxes” that he called “cells
• The concept of cell theory was found in 1839 by
Matthias Schleiden (botanist) Rudolf Virchow. (1801-
1838).
• In 1857 Kolliker discovered the mitochondrian in living
cell.
• In 1959 Jasen discovered the first compound
microscope.
CELL THEORY
• The Cell Theory states that ;
• A cell is a basic unit of a living organism
• all living things are made up of cells.
• All cells arise from pre existing cells by
division.
• The activity of an organism depends on the
total activity of independent cells.
MODERN CELL THEORY
• Morden cell theory expands on the original
principles , incorporating concepts like;
• Genetic information.Cells contain hereditary
information (DNA) that is passed on during
cell division.
• Cellular structure and function.Cells are the
basic units of structure and function in living
organisms.
• Cells maintain homeostasis (a stable internal
environment).
• Energy Flow: Energy flows within cells during
metabolism.
• All cells are basically the same in chemical
composition in organisms of similar species.
IMPORTANCE OF CELL THEORY
• Understanding diseases e.g. cancer
• Advancement in medicine.
• Biotechnology and genetic engineering.
• Evolutionary biology .
• Foundation of biology.
• Cell theory is a cornerstone of modern biology,
providing a framework for understanding the
structure, function, and organization of living
organisms.
Examples of cell theory’s impact
• Cancer research.
• Infectious disease
• Regenerative medicine.
