ausnahmsweise auch 900 m brauchbare Seide. Dabei wiegen 500–
600 Kokons 1 kg und etwa 10 kg derselben liefern 1 kg gesponnene
Seide, die an Haltbarkeit jede Pflanzenfaser übertrifft. Da nun aber
diese Rohseide hart, steif und ohne Glanz ist, wird sie durch Kochen
mit Seifenlauge zur Entfernung des Bastes „entschält“; dadurch wird
sie nicht nur glänzend und weiß, sondern auch leichter und besser
färbbar.
Von allen Städten Chinas ist das in einer tief sich ins Land hinein
erstreckenden Bucht an der Küste südlich von Schang-hai gelegene
Hang-tschose durch seine Seidenindustrie am berühmtesten. Ganze
Quartiere werden hier von Seidenwindern und -spinnern
eingenommen, die Tag für Tag ohne Unterbrechung ihrem Gewerbe
obliegen und sich nur an 3 oder 4 Tagen im Jahr, am Neujahrsfest,
Ruhe gönnen. Der größte Teil der Erzeugnisse dieser Stadt wird im
Inlande abgesetzt, da die reichen und vornehmen Chinesen sich von
jeher mit Vorliebe in Seidengewänder kleiden, die sehr kunstvoll mit
prächtigen Stickereien hergestellt werden. Die gesamte Ausfuhr der
Provinz Tsche-kiang beläuft sich nur auf 400 Pikuls (= 25000 kg)
jährlich im Werte von 1⁄4 Million Taels (= 11⁄2 Millionen Mark). Am
meisten Seide wird aus Han-kau, im Herzen Chinas am Yang-tse-
kiang oder blauen Flusse gelegen, ausgeführt. Hier erreicht ihr Wert
etwa 24 Millionen Mark im Jahr. Ebenso viel exportiert Kau-tau, dann
folgen der Reihe nach Tschi-fu und I-schang. Der Gesamtexport
Chinas beträgt im Jahre etwa für 150–160 Millionen Mark.
In den nördlichen Provinzen Chinas sowie in der Mandschurei
werden die Seidenraupen nicht mit Maulbeerblättern, sondern mit
Eichenlaub, bei uns in Europa auch mit den Blättern der
Schwarzwurzel (Scorzonera hispanica), großgezogen. Man läßt dort
die Raupen auf den Bäumen, wo sie sich selbst ernähren. Hier
bleiben sie ohne Pflege und besonderen Schutz, bis sie sich
eingesponnen haben. Die Frühjahrkokons werden nicht eingeheimst;
man läßt aus ihnen die Falter auskriechen und sich vermehren. Erst
die Herbstkokons werden geerntet und auf Seide verarbeitet. In
diesen nördlichen Provinzen, wie auch im Stromgebiet des Yang-tse-
kiang, sind die Krankheiten der Seidenraupe, welche in Frankreich
und Italien so große Verheerungen anrichten, unbekannt; dagegen
sind sie in Tsche-kiang schon aufgetreten. Trotzdem liefert China
unzweifelhaft auch heute noch die meiste Rohseide; und wollten die
Chinesen endlich die bewährten europäischen Erzeugungsmethoden
annehmen, so würde es ihnen leicht werden, den sich in letzter Zeit
äußerst stark geltend machenden japanischen Wettbewerb aus dem
Felde zu schlagen und ihre schon jetzt so großen Einnahmen zu
verdoppeln. Daß dies in verhältnismäßig naher Zukunft der Fall sein
wird, daran ist nicht im geringsten zu zweifeln.
Wie die Chinesen den Seidenspinner zum eigentlichen Haustier
erhoben, haben sie auch die Seidenraupenzucht im Altertum als ihr
ausschließliches Monopol eifersüchtig gehütet. Dieses Monopol
wurde zum erstenmal, soweit wir wissen, im Jahre 140 v. Chr., durch
eine chinesische Prinzessin durchbrochen. Solche wurden schon
damals als Opfer der Politik zur Einleitung freundschaftlicher
Beziehungen oder zur Befestigung bestehender Bündnisse
gewissermaßen als Ehrengeschenke Fürsten der angrenzenden
Länder gegeben. Eine solche brachte die Zucht der Seidenraupe aus
dem Herzen Chinas nach der uralten Kulturoase Chotan am
nördlichen Abhange des Kuen-lün oder Himmelsgebirges. Von Kind
auf mit der Aufzucht dieses Tieres vertraut, wollte sie es als teure
Erinnerung an die ferne Heimat mitnehmen. Das durfte sie aber nur
ganz im Verborgenen tun, und so schmuggelte sie Eier des
Seidenspinners in ihrem Kopfputz verborgen über die Grenze.
Schon lange vorher waren Kleidungsstücke und Stoffe von in
China bereiteter Seide als wertvolle Tauschmittel nach dem Auslande
gebracht worden, zumal nach dem reichen Indien, wo solche früher
schon an den Höfen und bei den Vornehmen einen beliebten
Schmuck bildeten. Über den Umweg Indien oder auch direkt kam
solcher Seidenstoff schon im Altertum auch in die Kulturländer am
Mittelmeer, wo man sich allerdings von dessen Gewinnung teilweise
sehr abenteuerliche Vorstellungen machte. So spricht der römische
Dichter Vergil (70–19 v. Chr.) in seiner Georgica „von den Wäldern
des Negerlandes, die weißgraue Wolle tragen — er versteht darunter
offenbar die Baumwolle — und von der feinen Wolle, welche die
Serer von Blättern kämmen“. Unter der Bezeichnung Serer verstand
das klassische Altertum die Chinesen im fernsten Asien, und deshalb
kann unter dieser von Blättern gekämmten Wolle nur die Seide, die
bereits damals bei den Vornehmen Roms gebräuchlich war,
verstanden worden sein. Auch der ältere Plinius (23–79 n. Chr.) sagt
in seiner Naturgeschichte: „Die Serer sind berühmt durch die Wolle
ihrer Wälder (also die Seide); sie begießen die weißgrauen Haare der
Blätter und kämmen sie ab. Unsere Weiber müssen die Fäden wieder
abwickeln und von neuem weben. So mühsam ist die Arbeit, durch
die unsere Damenkleider hergestellt werden, so weit her holt man
ihren Stoff“.
