What is Control-M?

Control-M is a workload automation and job scheduling tool from BMC(Baseboard Management Controller)
Software. It automates batch jobs across multiple platforms (Windows, Linux, UNIX, etc.) and applications.

Control-M Overview

 Developer: BMC Software

 Purpose: Workload automation and job scheduling tool
 Latest Version: 9.0.21.500 (as noted)

Architecture of Control-M (3-Tier)

1. Enterprise Manager (EM) – User interface for job management

2. Server – Handles scheduling and job execution logic
3. Agent – Executes the jobs on target systems

New Day Process (NDP)

 It resets the scheduling environment for the next batch cycle.

 Runs typically every 24 hours (customizable)
 Takes around 2 minutes

Key Components

 GCS (Global Control Server) – Central scheduling server

 GAS (Global Alert Server) – Manages alerts and notifications
 Agent – Executes the jobs
 Database – Oracle / PostgreSQL supported

Color Coding in Monitoring View

Color Meaning
Green Ended OK (Job completed successfully)
Red Ended Not OK (Job failed)
Yellow Waiting (Job is waiting to be executed)
Blue Executing (Job is currently running)
Sky Blue Waiting for resource or prerequisite (Queue)
Pink Waiting for confirmation (Manual step)
Grey Not submitted or in hold status
White Common default or unknown state

Resources & Workload Balancing

 Used to control and balance job execution

 Two Types:
o Quantitative: e.g., DB connections (numerical limits)
o Control: Logical flag to ensure sequential job execution
 Helps avoid overloading any one server

Order / Ocomposition

 Order – Submitting job into the active environment

 Ocomposition / Ostatus Values:
o 0 = Success (Ended OK)
o 1 = Failed (Ended Not OK)

6 GUI Domains in Control-M EM

Domain Function
Planning Define/modify job flows and schedules
Monitoring Monitor and control job execution
History Review job logs and past executions
Forecast Predict future workload and job runs
News System alerts and messages
Tools Admin and configuration utilities

Monitoring : to monitor job and performing the basic operation

Basic Operations in Monitoring
 Hold – Pause job before/during execution
 Run – Force immediate execution
 Rerun – Re-execute a completed job
 Restart – Restart from a specific point
 Kill – Stop a running job
 Force OK / Not OK – Manually set status
 Confirm – Manual confirmation for job start
