Design and Analysis of Buck Converter Circuits for Efficient Voltage

Regulation

Introduction
A Buck Converter, also known as a step-down DC-DC converter, is widely used in power
electronics to efficiently reduce the input voltage to a lower output voltage. It achieves high
efficiency through the use of switching components and energy storage elements like
inductors and capacitors.

Design Specifications
To proceed with a practical design, the following specifications are considered:

- Input Voltage, Vin: 24V

- Output Voltage, Vout: 12V
- Output Current, Iout: 2A
- Switching Frequency, fs: 50 kHz
- Output Voltage Ripple, ΔVout: 1% of Vout = 0.12V
- Inductor Ripple Current, ΔIL: 20% of Iout = 0.4A

Operation of Buck Converter

The buck converter operates in two modes:
1. ON-State: When the switch (typically an SCR/MOSFET) is closed, energy is transferred to
the inductor and load.
2. OFF-State: When the switch is open, the inductor continues to supply current to the load
via the freewheeling diode.
The output voltage is related to input by:
Vout = D × Vin
where D is the duty cycle,
D = Vout / Vin = 12 / 24 = 0.5

Inductor Value Calculation

The inductor value is given by:
L = (Vin - Vout) × D / (fs × ΔIL)
L = (24 - 12) × 0.5 / (50 × 10³ × 0.4) = 300 µH

Output Capacitor Calculation

To limit the output voltage ripple, the capacitor value is:
C = ΔIL / (8 × fs × ΔVout)
C = 0.4 / (8 × 50,000 × 0.12) ≈ 833 nF
Choose a standard value: 1 µF or higher.
Diode Selection
The diode should be:
- Fast recovery type (for high-frequency switching)
- Reverse voltage rating: > Vin = 24V
- Current rating: > Iout = 2A

SCR Selection Criteria

If an SCR is used as a switch:
- Must be turned ON by a gate pulse and OFF by natural or forced commutation.
- Rated for:
- Forward Blocking Voltage > 24V
- RMS Current > 2A
- Preferably use an SCR with a gate triggering circuit.
Alternatively, for better control and efficiency, a MOSFET or IGBT is often preferred.

Efficiency Analysis
Theoretical efficiency is high due to low switching and conduction losses.
Main loss sources:
- Conduction losses in switch and diode
- Switching losses (depends on transition time)
- ESR of capacitor and DCR of inductor
Assuming 90–95% efficiency for well-designed circuit.

Applications of Buck Converters

- Power supplies for microcontrollers and digital circuits
- Battery charging
- Electric vehicles
- Renewable energy systems
- Industrial automation

Conclusion
A Buck Converter offers a reliable and efficient method for voltage regulation. With well-
defined design specifications and correct component selection, the converter achieves
stable and ripple-free output, fulfilling industrial application needs.
