3 AIRFRAME

3.1 Fuselage group

The Avanti II's aluminium fuselage is circular in

cross section and tapers both fore and aft.
Cabin width extends to 6 feet (1828 mm) and a
dropped aisle provides a cabin height of 5 feet
9 inches (1753 mm).
Ft
The two-part cabin door is located on the left-
hand side of the fuselage and is 53 inches
(1346 mm) high and 24 inches (610 mm) wide.
The upper half of the door is side-hinged and
5
swings forward to open. The lower cabin door,
which has two steps, is bottom-hinged and
opens downward.

10
A plug-type emergency exit hatch is located on
the right-hand side of the cabin immediately
opposite the cabin door.
15 The aft fuselage extends from the aft pressure
bulkhead to the tail-cone and is divided into two
17.6 sections: the wing/fuselage intersection area
and the baggage compartment area.

Within the wing/fuselage intersection area, the

space over the wing and between the forward
and central bulkheads contains an integral fuel
tank. This tank is divided into two parts by a
centre panel and is interlinked with the wing
tanks. Located in the fuselage beneath the wing
are most major accessories.

The baggage compartment is located in the aft

ft part of the fuselage between the third wing spar
bulkhead and the tail-cone.
6
Baggage compartment length is 76.8 (1951
mm) inches and total volume is 44 cubic feet
5.8 ft 5 (1.25 m3). The baggage door is a composite
part and is hinged at the top.

4 SYSTEMS

4.1 Flight Controls

Control surfaces are mechanically connected to
the pilot controls via cables, pulleys, push-pull
rods and bellcranks in a closed loop system.
Primary controls consist of ailerons, elevators
and rudder. The pilot controls consist of a
control wheel hinged on a yoke control column
and adjustable rudder pedals hinged on the
cockpit floor, in a dual-pilot control
configuration.

Differential ailerons provide roll control. An

autopilot rotary actuator may also drive the
ailerons quadrants. An aileron trim tab is Longitudinal (pitch) Control System
installed on the right aileron.
The rudder controls the aeroplane directionally
about its vertical axis. A close loop cable circuit,
push-pull rods and a bell-crank assembly
connect rudder pedals quadrant to rudder
quadrant. An autopilot rotary actuator may also
drive the pedals quadrant. The control system
uses no dampers, stick-pushers or boosted
control mechanisms. Secondary control is
provided by the aileron and rudder trim tabs for
roll and yaw, and by the all-movable horizontal
stabiliser for pitch. All trimming surfaces are
electrically operated and controlled.
Lateral (roll) Control System

The pitch control system consists of an all

moving stabiliser-elevator assembly. The trim
system for this control is an electromechanical
actuator which controls the stabiliser angle of
attack. The autopilot system may drive both the
horizontal tail trim actuator and an autopilot
rotary actuator connected in the control cable
closed loop. The elevator provides primary pitch
control and consists of two surfaces separately
hinged to the stabiliser. An up-down spring
mechanism, linked to the stabiliser, is installed
in the longitudinal control system to provide a
suitable pilot stick force through the complete Directional (yaw) Control System
centre-of-gravity range, to provide increased
stability at high speed and to improve
trimmability at low speed. Pitch trim is accomplished by repositioning the
horizontal stabiliser to the desired trim setting
through actuation of the horizontal pitch trim
actuator. The three-motor, screw-jack type
actuator has a primary and a secondary mode
of operation. Longitudinal trim is mechanically
fail-safe.

The hydraulic system provides hydraulic power

for nose wheel steering, wheel braking, landing

Hydraulic power is generated by a hydraulic

Connect provides the following functions:

• Worldwide GPS tracking function: the SATCOM transceiver transmits real-time GPS
data to a selected service provider, through the Iridium Network.
The system allows a constant awareness of the location and flight status for the aircraft
fleet. The aircraft operator can get internet-based real time access to the aircraft position
and to a flight data history for the fleet (flight data, airport/time of departure, route,
airport/time of arrival), through subscription with a service provider.
• Satellite text messaging and direct voice calls: a communication interface from
Sky Connect provides fast access to satellite text messaging and voice calls.
Data, names and phone number choices for voice communication, and a complete set of
predefined text messages can be selected through a Mission Management Unit (MMU)
installed in the cockpit. The MMU is controlled by an alphanumeric display and a
multifunction control knob.

ENGINE DATA ACQUISITION & MONITORING SYSTEM A-015

The ADAS (Aircraft Data Acquisition System) P&WC / Altair provides optional maintenance
information, enabling the operator to control, qualify and manage engine maintenance
operations. Engine data are downloaded through a serial port by means of a dedicated
software (MLP – Monitor Link Program).
Through the same MLP software data are upload to Altair Turbine Tracker web service, an
Internet-based data management system software (Turbine Tracker web site) for remote engine
data management.
The system performs the following primary functions:
• Exceedance Events Recording
• Engine Trend Monitoring
• Built-in Test Capability (Trend/Fault Illuminated Pushbutton)
The ADAS system main components are:
• System Processor Unit (provided with a dedicated mount),
• Trend Switch/Fault illuminated pushbutton (on the instrument panel),
• Serial connection for data upload/download with Monitor Link Program to manage
ADAS.

Collected data can be uploaded to an Internet-based service provider which allows to track the
usage and performance trend of the engine in real-time.

ENGINE DATA TRANSFER UNIT – P&WC / ALTAIR A-016

The Engine Data Transmission Unit (DTU) system provides the communication capabilities
through which the engine performance data can stream to the maintenance organization without
pilot/operator intervention. This equipment requires the installation of the ADAS (Aircraft Data
Acquisition System), as the source of data.
On landing, the DTU automatically collects data from the ADAS and the DTU establishes a
cellular connection (utilizing GSM/GPRS) with the Altair TurbineTracker™, an Internet based
data management service for review and remote engine trouble-shooting.

to include:

• PIAGGIO’s patented Three-Lifting-Surface

Configuration (3LSC), which permits a 34-

conventional designs, thereby reducing
weight and drag;
• A non-cylindrical, low-drag fuselage shape,

With the pure canard (2-surface) configuration,
pitch control is far more difficult and may
require the weight and complexity of variable

wing.
The Avanti’s pitch control and stall
characteristics are so conventional that the
aircraft does not require a stick-pusher or
stick-shaker as some conventional aircraft
designs.
