SUMMARY OF VARIOUS LABOUR LAWS IN INDIA

The various labour legislations enacted by the Central Government can be classified into the
following different broad categories:
A. Laws relating to Industrial Relations-
1. Industrial Disputes Act, 1947
2. Trade Unions Act, 1926

B. Laws relating to Wages


1. Payment of Wages Act, 1936: Ensures timely right salary after permissible deduction to
the employees.
2. Minimum Wages Act, 1948: safeguard the workers to get minimum wages from their
respective employers at the prevailing price index
3. Payment of Bonus Act, 1965

4. Equal Remuneration Act, 1975

C. Laws relating to Social Security


1. Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952: pension and family
benefits
2. Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948: Insurance coverage for various contengencies, and
death benefits
3. Labour Welfare Fund Act (of respective States)
4. Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972: reward for long service
5. Workmen’s Compensation Act, 1923: periodic payment for medical care and loss of
earning capacity
6. Maternity Benefit Act: medical care before and after delivery of the child.

D. Laws relating to Working Hours, Conditions of Services and Employment


1. Factories Act, 1948: provide security to workers against health, cleanliness, safety good
working condition and employment of women and children.
