Theory(full/bare infinitives/gerund)

a. Verb + infinitive: Use the infinitive with to after certain verbs and expressions:
can’t afford, arrange, fail, agree, appear, care, decide, hope, learn, manage,
plan, pretend, promise,refuse, threaten, want, seem.

I pretended to study but I didn’t.


The prisoner refused to give the name of his friend.
The terrorist threatened to explode the bomb.
b. Verb+ ing: Use the gerund after certain verbs and expressions: adore,
avoid,consider,dislike,detest,enjoy,involve,discuss,endure,face,fancy,feel
like,include, risk, quit, deny, end, imagine, finish, mind, can’t help, can’t
stand, mention, miss, get/be used to, be no good, it’s no use, be worth, admit,
delay, discuss, feel like, keep, mention, postpone, practise, resume, resist,
resent, spend time, suggest, understand, go/come + activity verb or sport
“ing”.

When a phrasal verb is followed by another verb, the verb is the gerund. E.g. carry on,
keep on, give up, look forward to, etc.
1. I can’t help loving you.
2. I can’t stand getting up early in the morning.
3. Although I am from France, I am / got used to living in Spain.
4. It’s no use phoning him. The line is always busy.
5. It’s worth visiting London.
6. Anne goes jogging every morning.
7. Would you like to come fishing?
8. I am looking forward to going on holiday.

c. Verb + BARE INFINITIVE


After modal verbs (all the modal verbs, except “ought” must be followed by the infinitive
without “to”), after the verbs “let” and “make” and after “would rather” and “had better”.
I won’t let you ride my bicycle.
He made me move my car.
I’d rather go to the beach than to the mountains.

Complete the sentences with the correct form (infinitive, “-ing form” or bare
infinitive) of the verb.
