GEE-142-QUIZ-1
QUIZ – 1
Topic: HORIZONTAL CURVES
Due Date: February 26, 2025 (before examination)

Copy and Answer. Include necessary figures/drawings to support your solutions. Use Long bond paper.
Incomplete solutions will not be graded.
Problem 1. Given 𝐼 = 44° and 𝑅 = 400𝑓𝑡. Compute the deflection angle per foot.
Problem 2. The common tangent AB of a compound curve is 82.32 m. The angles the common tangent makes
with the tangents through PC and PT of the compound curve are 21°10′ and 5°20′, respectively. If the degree of
the first curve is 3°30′, what is the degree of the second curve?
Problem 3. A spiral easement curve, 80 m long is used to connect a circular curve having a radius of 400m.
Determine the degree of the curve at the midpoint of the spiral.
Problem 4. Determine the spiral angle at the end point (S.C.) for an 80 m spiral having a central curve radius of
176.3m.
Problem 5. Two tangents having azimuths of 240° and 282° are connected by an 80-m spiral curve with a 6°
circular curve. The width of the roadway is 10 m. Determine the external distance, length of spiral tangents,
and di erence in lengths between the long and short tangents.
Problem 6. A spiral curve, 100 m long, is to be connected to a simple curve of radius 300 m. If the resulting
angle of intersection of the tangents for the spiral at points T.S. and S.T., respectively, determine the central
angle of the simple curve.
Problem 7. The perpendicular distance between two parallel tangents is 10 m. If the angle of intersection of the
first curve is 10° with radius of 200 m, what would be the radius of the second curve?
Problem 8. The degree of the simple curve is 4°30’, length of the curve of 300 m,and the required superelevation
of 8%. Determine the following:
(a) O set distance from the tangent on the first quarter point of the spiral.
(c) Deflection angle at 3rd quarter point from the tangent to the spiral at T.S.
(i) Maximum velocity that a car could pass through the spiral easement curve.
