definition
Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior used by one person
to gain or maintain power and control over another person in a
close relationship. It can happen between spouses, partners,
parents and children, or other family members.

In many constitutions and legal systems, domestic violence

is recognized as a human rights violation that threatens an
individual's right to safety, dignity, and equality.
For example, under Jordanian law and international
agreements such as CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination
of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women), domestic
violence is prohibited, and states are obligated to protect
victims and punish perpetrators.

history
In many traditional societies, domestic violence was considered a private family matter, and laws
often failed to protect victims—especially women and children.
It wasn’t until the late 20th century that domestic violence was formally recognized as a public crime
and a violation of human rights.
The UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women (1993) marked a global turning
point in acknowledging and addressing domestic violence.
Global Statistics
🌍 1 in 3 women worldwide has experienced physical or sexual violence
in her lifetime—most often by an intimate partner.
🧒 275 million children globally are exposed to domestic violence at
home.
📆 Every year, tens of thousands of women are killed by intimate
partners or family members.
💔 According to the Jordanian National Council for Family Affairs,
domestic violence is among the most reported family crimes.
📈 In 2021 alone, over 10,000 cases of family violence were reported to
Jordan’s Family Protection Department—most involving women and
children.

Job loss or difficulty maintaining employment

Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old woman, was reported missing in September
2021 while traveling across the U.S. with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie.
Authorities later found her body, and it was ruled that she died due to
"homicidal violence." The case received widespread media attention, not
only due to the tragic loss of life but also because of the earlier signs of
emotional and physical abuse that had been evident in their relationship, as
seen in police bodycam footage.
why people stay
Fear: Of retaliation, of being killed, or of worsening abuse if they try to leave.
Low self-worth: Abusers often destroy a victim’s confidence.
Financial dependence: No money, job, or support to survive alone.
Children: Wanting to protect children or fear of losing custody.
Religious or cultural beliefs: Teaching that divorce or separation is wrong.

"What will people

say?"
"Maybe it’s my "He said he’d
fault." change."
analysis
“Domestic violence doesn’t
start with a slap.
It starts with control,
silence, and fear.
And it ends when someone
speaks up.”
