Basic Electronic Circuit LAB

The document outlines a lab session focused on the practical implementation of basic electronic components, specifically the light dependent resistor (LDR). It explains the properties of LDRs, their resistance variations with light intensity, and their applications in controlling lighting circuits. The document also includes instructions for experiments to observe the behavior of LDRs in different light conditions and to record observations related to LED status based on light intensity.

Physics (Basic Electronic Circuit)

This lab session has a purpose of practical implementation of theoretical knowledge about basic component in electronics.

One of the basic component in electronics is light dependent resistor or a photoresistor is a device that is sensitive to light.
Its resistance varies according to the intensity of light incident on it. Electrical resistance is defined as the property of an
electrical component to resist the flow of electric current. The unit of electrical resistance is ohm, symbolized by the Greek
letter omega (Ω).

LDR is made from a semiconductor material with light resistors to have light sensitive properties, one such materials is,
cadmium sulphide. Snake–like tracks are made of cadmium sulphide on thin metal films [Fig. 1].

Fig. 1. A Light Dependent Resistance (LDR)

To know the effect of light intensity on LDR resistance, do the experiment in Fig. 2 using multitester and write your
observation.

Fig. 2. Finding the resistance value of LDR on bright light and dark environment

In total darkness, LDR has a (high or low ?) …………………………… resistance.

In a bright light, LDR has a (high or low ?) …………………………… resistance.

This properties of LDR makes it useful in controlling lighting circuits so that they come on when it gets dark and
similarly switch off again once it becomes light.

Fig.3. LDR schematic to control LED

For Fig.3, make the room totally dark and watch the status of the LED. After that let the LDR get the light and
watch what happens to the LED light. Write your observation result on the table below.

Based on result in the table, state one application of the circuit as shown in Fig.3 :
