Learning Objective:
Students will be able to identify and describe the characteristics of
living things.
Materials Needed:
- Pictures or drawings of living and non-living things
- Whiteboard or chart paper
- Markers
- Art supplies (crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc.)
Procedure:
Introduction:
1. Begin the lesson by engaging students in a discussion about what it
means to be alive. Prompt them with questions such as:
- What makes something alive?
- Can you name some living things? What about non-living things?
2. Show pictures or drawings of various objects, including plants,
animals, rocks, and machines. Ask students to classify each object as
living or non-living and explain their reasoning.
3. Introduce the concept of characteristics and explain that scientists
have identified specific traits that all living things share.

5. Divide the class into small groups and rotate through a series of
hands-on activities related to the characteristics of living things:
- Sorting Living and Non-living things
- Nature Observation walk: Students will go around the school and
record all the information they collected.
