Lyric Analysis Project

Standards:
RL.7.1 / RI.7.1 Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support
analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn
from the text.

RL.7.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its

development over the course of the text.

RL.7.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are

used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings;
analyze the impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds (e.g.,
alliteration) on a specific verse or stanza of a poem or section of a
story or drama.

The Assignment:
Step 1: Make a copy of this document for yourself (already has been done for you on
Google Classroom!).

Step 2: Look up your favorite song and copy the lyrics onto the document you just
copied for yourself. Sidenote: this song MUST be school appropriate; imagine this
assignment being sent to your grandparents or the principal. If you choose a song that
is inappropriate, you need to use the clean version or change the lyrics.

Step 3: Above the dashed line, write a paragraph explaining why you decided to choose
this song, as well as its significance to you.

Step 4: Read your lyrics for the sole purpose of understanding; then, the second time,
read through your lyrics and highlight all the figurative language that is used.

Step 5: After you’ve highlighted all the example of figurative language in your song,
convert the five best examples into the chart located under the dashed line; this chart
requires that you identify which figurative language is being used, that you copy and
paste this specific example from the lyric, and finally, that you explain how this piece of
figurative language affects your understanding of the song / why you believe the author
made this choice.

Step 6: Read through the lyrics for a third time in order to understand the song’s theme;
once you have determined this theme, write your claim in the 2nd chart.

Step 7: Find the best piece of supporting evidence for your theme claim, highlight it
green, and then copy/paste it into the 2nd chart; finally, provide reasoning.

Step 8: Write a final paragraph that explains this song’s significance to your
culture/identity.

Step 9: Double check to make sure you have everything required (look at the rubric
below!), and then turn in this assignment to Google Classroom.
