massweightlab

The Mass and Weight Lab aims to differentiate between mass and weight, identify their units, and confirm Earth's gravitational pull of 9.8 N/kg. The procedure involves measuring the mass and weight of various objects using a dynamometer and recording the data. Results will be analyzed for trends and compared to the accepted gravitational value.

Mass and Weight Lab

OBJECTIVE

• To distinguish between the mass and the weight of an object.

• To discover the types of units used for mass and weight.
• To verify that the gravitational pull of the earth on any object is
9.8N/kg

INTRODUCTION
There is an interesting relationship between mass and weight. It
depends on what planet you take the weight measurement. There can even
be slight differences on earth, depending if you are at sea level or on a
mountain-top.

Force gravitational = mass X gravitational field intensity

MATERIALS
• Dynamometer (spring scale)
• Objects of different masses
• Retort stand
• Clamp

PROCEDURE
1. Select one of the masses at random.
2. Record this mass in grams in Table 1.
3. Determine the weight of the same object, in Newtons, by hanging the
object on the hook of the dynamometer. Record this value in Table 1.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 using different masses. You should have a total of
10 different masses.
5. Return items as you found them and ask your teacher for more and
larger masses.

BE CAREFUL!! Do not exceed the mass limit for each of the

spring scales provided.

What trends/patterns do you observe in your results? You must describe at

least 1 pattern/trend.
Graph your results and draw the line-of-best-fit through the points.

Calculate the slope of the line-of-best-fit. Include the units. Compare the
slope that you have found to the accepted value for the gravitational field
intensity of 9.8 N/kg on planet earth?
