Aim/Goal: to teach the endings of past simple
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
• define past simple
• differentiate the different endings of past simple (-ed, -ied)
• use the verbs in past simple
Subject: Past Simple
Lexical focus: verbs (visit, play, watch, play, marry, study, try, visit, open, listen, dance)
job related verbs (serve, cook, fly, cure, photograph)
Linguistic focus: -ed, -ied
Approach/Method/Techniques: Audio Lingual, Direct Method, Task Based, TPR
Materials: visual aid, worksheet, smartboard, whiteboard, ball
Assumptions: Students are familiar with present simple. Students are familiar with the meaning of
given verbs.
Possible Problems And Solutions:
-Students might not remember previously learned vocabulary/grammar. They will be reminded
implicitly.
-There might be pronunciation errors. They will be corrected implicitly, by repeating the correct
pronunciation.
-Time may not be enough. Teacher can continue the activities in the next lesson.

Pre-teaching

Warm up: Teacher asks yes/no questions to the students and notes down their answers on the
whiteboard. Some examples are provided.
Duration: 5’
Aim: to revise simple past

Activity 1: Reviewing past simple / comprehension questions


Duration: 5’
Instructions: Small dialogues are given. T. asks comprehension questions.
Aim: -to revise the positive form of past simple

While-teaching

Activity 2: Choose the correct / -ed vs -ied on Wordwall


Duration: 15’
Aim: -to practice past simple
Instructions: Students have to choose the correct ending of the given verb.
“Choose the correct answer …”
Post-teaching

Activity 3: Transformation exercise / Tick-Tac-Toe


Duration: 15’
Aim: -to reinforce past simple in a fun way
Instruction: T. hands a worksheet. Students form a sentence in past simple to claim a square and put
an X or O. The exercise is done as a whole-class activity so to see and correct any possible
mistakes.
“Make a correct sentence, write it and put an X or O.”

Extra activities

Activity 1: Picture Description


Duration: 10’
Aim: -to review jobs and verbs related to jobs and reinforce the past simple
Instruction: Pictures along with extra verbs are given to students. Students have to pick the correct
verb and describe what they see.
“What did he/she do yesterday?”

Activity 2: Ball game


Duration: 10’
Aim: -to make learning more enjoyable and practice past simple
Instruction: Notes with verbs are glued to a ball. Students make a sentence using the verb they see
on their front in past simple and throw the ball to someone else.
“Make a sentence in past simple, and throw it to your friend.”

Activity 3: What did he/she do?


Duration: 10’
Aim: -to practice past simple
Instruction: The day of five people are introduced. Students have to describe what they did
yesterday.
