Automation Practical No:- 06

AIM: - Study and report on Industrial Robotics: Sensors and Actuators.

Industrial Robot:
“A reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or
specialized devices through various programmed motions for the performance of a variety of
tasks.”
Types of Robot Sensors:
A device which detects or measures a physical property and records, indicates, or otherwise
responds to it.

Scheme of Robot Sensors:

External sensors include CCD camera, Force / Torque Sensors, Proximity Sensor and various
tactile sensors to acquire knowledge or get information from the environment.
Internal sensors may include Encoders, Tachometers, Force / Torque Transducer, Electrical
and Optical devices that transfer information about position speed and articulations of the
manipulator to interact with the environment.
Types of Robot Actuators:
An actuator is a component of a robot that is responsible for moving or controlling a
mechanism or system. Actuators are the devices which provide the actual motive force for the
manipulator joints of the robots.

Desirable Features for Sensors & Transducers:

Precision: It should be as high as possible and deviation in the measurement of reading should
minimum.
Accuracy: It should as high as possible, error between sensed value and actual value should
approach zero.
Speed of Response: Time taken to respond to variation should be minimum and response
should be instantaneous.
Operating Range: It should be wide and accuracy over the range to be acceptable.
Reliability: The lifts to be high and frequent failure are not acceptable.
Cost and Ease: The cost of purchase should be low. The installation and operation should be
easy and less costly.

Calibration: It should be easy to calibrate and drift to be minimum. It should take less time to
calibrate without much trouble.
