I FELL IN LOVE WITH REFLEXOLOGY IN THE LATE 1980S
IN GERMANY, WHERE I ATTENDED MY FIRST CLASS ON
FOOT REFLEXOLOGY. I WAS AMAZED BY HOW SIMPLE
AND YET SO POWERFUL REFLEXOLOGY IS, AND I
COULDN’T WAIT TO TRY IT OUT ON FAMILY AND
FRIENDS.
AFTER MOVING TO THE UNITED STATES IN 2000, I SEARCHED FOR A SCHOOL TO BECOME
CERTIFIED AND FOUND THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF REFLEXOLOGY, WHERE I STUDIED THE
FLOCCO METHOD OF INTEGRATED FOOT, HAND, AND EAR REFLEXOLOGY.

After exploring how hand reflexology works and its many benefits, you will
be introduced to the hand reflexology map as a micro-map of the human
body.
Chapter 2
TECHNIQUES

Learn the principles of using a variety of thumb and finger techniques to


reflex points on the hand, and ways to relax the hands.

Chapter 3
FULL REFLEXOLOGY ROUTINE

This chapter looks at the six regions of the hands and their correlation with
parts of the body. There is a step-by-step reflexing routine for each region,
which can be combined into a single full reflexology routine.

SPECIFIC AILMENTS

This main section highlights areas of concern in the body, in the order of the
regions discussed in Chapter 3, and ways to relieve them using hand
reflexology techniques.
TAKE CARE

Reflexology is considered safe when performed with a gentle and


nurturing touch, and has no known side-effects. Before you begin
reflexing your hands, take note of the following precautions, such
as when it is advised to use lighter touch, when you should check
with a health-care provider before performing reflexology, or when
you should wait until a condition has cleared up.

Precautions
Make sure you don’t work directly over any cuts, bruises, broken skin, skin
infection, or other skin conditions, nor on strains or sprains, broken bones,
or bone or joint injury you might be experiencing in your hands.

Permissions
In some cases it is advisable to obtain a doctor’s authorization before
performing reflexology.
LYMPHATIC CANCER
Talk to your oncologist. Deep relaxation increases lymph flow, and cancer
cells may potentially be carried through the body by the lymphatic vessels.
TYPE 2 DIABETES
Check with your health-care provider before starting reflexology.
HEMOPHILIA
Get a doctor’s authorization. If permission is granted, start with very light
pressure until you know how your body responds to reflexology.
ALTERNATING HIGH/LOW BLOOD PRESSURE
Get a doctor’s authorization. With deep relaxation your blood pressure
could change suddenly from very high to an extreme low.
Contraindications
There are situations when reflexology is considered a contraindication and
should not be used at all.
FIRST TRIMESTER PREGNANCY
During this sensitive time the fetus settles into the womb, and you do not
want to disturb that process in any form. However, if the mother suffers
from morning sickness it is safe enough to very gently just hold (but not
work) the solar plexus point to ease the nausea (see here).
AFTER ORGAN TRANSPLANT
Wait at least six months, or until the new organ is completely accepted by
the body. Obtain a doctor’s authorization before starting reflexology.

WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?

The integrated health practice of reflexology maps a reflection of


the body predominantly on the feet, hands, and outer ears.
Reflexology uses unique thumb and finger techniques to deliver
pressure to neural pathways, helping the body function optimally,
as well as relieving pain and discomfort.

Each part of the body has a corresponding reflex location on the feet, hands,
and outer ears. We can look at the reflex maps as micro maps of the human
body. This natural health approach promotes relaxation, increases
circulation, and balances the body’s systems in a holistic manner.

Through the simple touch of reflexology, we can help activate the body’s
self-healing ability in a safe and nurturing way.

How reflexology works


Reflexology works through the nervous system. Everything in the body is
interconnected through nerves, which are the body’s message pathways.
When health imbalances occur somewhere in the body, blockages and
congestions of different chemical types accumulate around nerve endings in
the corresponding reflex locations on the feet, hands, and outer ears.

It is suggested that one of these chemicals is Substance P, a neurotransmitter


functioning as a pain transmitter. This accumulated deposit hinders the
bioelectric current from flowing freely through the nerve, partially blocking
nerve messages. Gently breaking down Substance P and other chemicals
with specific reflexology techniques encourages the flow of the bioelectric
current to return to normal, helping to bring balance and health to the
distant corresponding part of the body. Soothing nerve endings on the hands
and feet not only helps the person feel better overall, but also assists in
activating the body’s self- healing ability.
Background and research
Some form of foot and hand work was known to ancient cultures, including
those in China, Egypt, India, Japan, and Europe. Written evidence of the
reflexology map concept, however, was produced only in the early 1900s,
when two American doctors documented an orderly arrangement of
reflexes, closely resembling the shape of the human body, superimposed on
the feet and hands. In 1917, William FitzGerald, MD introduced the basic
map concept of a vertical zone theory. Joe Shelby Riley, MD introduced the
horizontal regions in 1924 after studying extensively with Dr. FitzGerald.
Adding to FitzGerald’s vertical zones, Riley’s detailed documentation of the
horizontal regions accelerated the development of modern reflexology.

Over the years, complex reflexology maps as we know them today, mainly
on the feet, hands, and outer ears, have been developed, and extensive
research studies following scientific protocol and investigating the
effectiveness of reflexology have been conducted around the world.

Reflexology helps to promote self-healing through deep relaxation,


increased circulation, pain reduction, improved immune function,
and so much more. The beauty of hand reflexology is that you can
use it anywhere for self-care purposes, whether in the comfort of
your own home or on a bus journey to a job interview.

REDUCED STRESS
It can be quite a challenge to keep balanced and relaxed. By soothing the
nerves, reflexology helps the body to deeply relax, balancing body and
mind and easing tension.

IMPROVED CIRCULATION
When the muscles begin to relax, the body’s smallest blood vessels, the
capillaries, open up and supply all of our cells with more oxygen and
nutrients, which helps support cell function. This improves all body
functions, and thus encourages the body’s self-healing ability.
OPTIMIZED ORGAN AND GLAND FUNCTION
Prolonged stress and tension can cause organs and glands to become
imbalanced. Through improved circulation and better cell function our body
is more likely to return to balance, helping the organs and glands to function
more efficiently.

IMPROVED IMMUNE FUNCTION


When our cells and organs function at an optimal level, everything in the
body starts working better. This promotes the body’s self-healing ability and
helps to strengthen our immune system. When using reflexology regularly
our overall health is likely to improve.

RELIEF OF PAIN AND DISCOMFORT


One of the many benefits of reflexology is pain reduction or elimination.
When we enter into a state of deep relaxation, where stress and tension can
melt away, our body is able to produce certain chemicals to help reduce or
eliminate pain.

Foot and hand reflexology mostly share the same general benefits.
However, it has been found that hand reflexology can sometimes be even
more effective than foot reflexology for relieving headaches and
stomachaches, as well as any issues with the arms and hands.
