QUESTION 2

2.1 Using Table 1, establish the revised central line and control limits for the applicable chart
with 25 subgroups. The trial central line is 5.64, the UCL is 12.76, and LCL is 0. (10)
Note: Not all the subgroups are included in the data; however, the sums are correct.
Excluded subgroups in Table 1 are all in control.

2.2 Discuss 5 objectives of nonconforming charts (10)

Nonconforming charts: (any 5)
• Determine the average quality level. Knowledge of the quality average is essential as
a benchmark. This information provides the process capability in terms of attributes.
• Bring to the attention of management any changes in the average. Once the average
quality (proportion nonconforming) is known, changes, either increasing or
decreasing, become significant.
• Improve the product quality. In this regard, a p chart can motivate operating and
management personnel to initiate ideas for quality improvement. The chart will tell
whether the idea is an appropriate or inappropriate one.
• Evaluate the quality performance of operating and management personnel.
Supervisors of activities and especially the chief executive officer (CEO) should be
evaluated by a chart for nonconforming units. Other functional areas, such as
engineering, sales, finance, and so on, may find a chart for nonconformities more
applicable for evaluation purposes.
• Suggest places to use X and R charts. Even though the cost of computing and charting
X and R charts is more than the chart for nonconforming units, the X and R charts are
much more sensitive to variations and are more helpful in diagnosing causes. In other
words, the chart for nonconforming units suggests the source of difficulty, and the X
and R charts find the cause.
• Determine acceptance criteria of a product before shipment to the customer.
Knowledge of the proportion nonconforming provides management with information
on whether to release an order.

QUESTION 3

3. 2 Outline 4 characteristics of statistical in-control process. (8)

• The natural pattern of variation - the points or subgroup average values forms its own
frequency distribution.
• Only chance causes of variation are present and are part of a stable process.

4
• The points are located back and forth across the central line in a random manner, with
no points beyond the control limits.
• All points stacked at one end, forms a normal curve.
• Assignable causes have been eliminated from the process to the point that plotted
subgroups are within control limits.
