Question 8: Algebra, Relations and Functions and Graphs
The Parabola (Drawing, sketching, roots, turning points,
minimum/maximum points, axis of symmetry.
Drawing a tangent to the parabola and estimating the gradient.
Completing the square (minimum/maximum point, minimum/maximum
value, axis of symmetry, roots)
Solving a quadratic equation by completing the square
Linear Programming (writing inequalities, drawing the graph of inequalities,
shading the common region, finding the minimum/maximum profit)
Kinematics (average speed, velocity, acceleration, deceleration, units,
distance –time graphs, velocity-time graphs, speed –time graphs, finding
average speed on a distance-time graph (gradient gives speed), finding
acceleration/deceleration on a velocity-time graph and a speed –time graph
(gradient gives acceleration/deceleration), finding distance covered in a
velocity-time graph and a speed –time graph (area under the graph gives
distance covered).
Simultaneous equations: one equation is linear and the other is quadratic or
non-linear (use substitution)
