CHECKLIST FOR PROCEDURE STATION: REMOVAL OF

INTRAUTERINE CONTRACEPTIVE DEVICE (IUCD)

Greet and explain procedure to the examiner
Before the procedure
- Obtain informed consent from the patient
- Confirm the presence and position of the IUCD
- Perform a physical and pelvic examination
- Ensure that necessary equipment is available
Procedure preparation
- Provide privacy
- Position the patient in the lithotomy position
- Insert the speculum correctly to visualize the
cervix
- Identify the IUCD strings
- Clean the cervix with antiseptic solution
Removal of IUCD
- Grasp the IUCD strings with ring forceps or artery
forceps
- Apply gentle traction to withdraw the IUCD
smoothly
- If resistance is felt, stop and assess for
complications
- Ensure the entire IUCD is removed
Post-Removal Care
- Ensure the patient is comfortable and check for
immediate complications
- Inspect the IUCD to confirm it is intact
- Educate the patient on possible post-removal
symptoms
- Advise the patient on follow-up and alternative
contraception options
- Dispose of used instruments appropriately
- Document the procedure in the patient’s records
