Travel Information
Tyne Coast College has a number of sites across South & North Tyneside. South Shields Marine School is
where the School of Marine Engineering is situated and is sited about 2 miles south of South Shields town
centre, in an area called Westoe.
There is a Post Office and a number of shops and café’s close to the college.
BY ROAD
A1(M) – A19(M) – A194 – A1300 (Ring Road for South Shields) – A1018, then watch for road signs for the
college on the right after crossing two roundabouts.
A1(M) – A19 (Tyne Tunnel Road) – A194 – A1330 (Ring Road for South Shields), then as above.
Travelling South on A1 (Western Bypass) and wanting to join A194(M), leave A1 at slip road onto A1231
sign posted Sunderland, straight across roundabout onto B1288 sign posted Tyne Tunnel, pass Mill House
pub, join A194(M), then follow instructions as above from the South.
BY RAIL
Board a Metro train with the final destination of South Shields and disembark the Metro at Chichester Metro
Station (Metro Travel Line info tel: 08712002233). Turn left out of the station and walk uphill (Dean Road)
to college (less than 10 minutes), or take a taxi (Westoe Taxis: 0191 4544941).
BY AIR
At Newcastle International Airport (Customer Enquiries tel: 0871 8821121) either take a taxi (approx cost
of £30-£40) to the college, or follow the signs to the Metro Station (rapid transit underground/overground
network), which is situated to one side of the main airport concourse (approximate cost £5.00-£6.00 –
please note that the Metro trains do not run continuously through 24 hours). Board the Metro train from the
airport with the final destination South Hylton and leave at South Gosforth Metro Station to change onto a
Metro train with the final destination of South Shields, disembarking the Metro at Chichester Metro Station.

Please use the information provided and the maps enclosed to assist you in getting to the college. On
arrival at the main entrance, please ask a member of staff in the Information Centre to assit you on
directions to the Marine Reception outside G101 before 0900.
ENROLMENT DOCUMENTS
Please bring all relevant professional documents with you, including your short course certificates,
discharge book/papers, compant testimonial letters etc. An MCA application form (obtained from the MCA
website www.mcga.gov.uk) must be completed and processed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency
before you will be eligible to sit the examinations. Please bring this form of the Notice of Eligibility (issued
by the MCA) with you when you come to the college. Although you do not need the Notice of Eligibility to
start the course you should satisfy yourself that you would be able to meet all the criteria for its issue.
Overseas students should note that in order to open a UK bank account they will need a letter from the
college to confirm that they are enrolled on the course. It can take up to 10 working days for an account to
be set up. This should be borne in mind when bringing funds into the UK.

The accommodation used by course participants will vary according to the requirements of the individual.
