MECHANICS FOR TEAM BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION
Bridge Design and Construction
1. Each team must be composed of 3 members and the entry is per school.
2. Each team will be provided by a piece of bond paper and a pencil.
3. Each team will be provided by a design that would serve as their guide
(SAMPLE)
4. The following design constraints that each time must make or create:
· Bridge must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) in length and able to
span an 8-inch (20 cm) gap.
· Bridge must be able to securely hold gradually added weight placed in
its center until it fails (begins to bend)
· Bridge must incorporate a design
· Bridge must be made of 20 (or fewer) straws
· Teams may not receive any replacement straws
5. Teams are going to brainstorm design ideas for their bridges and record
and sketch their ideas on paper (5-7 minutes). Teams are advised to carefully
plan out their cutting of the straws since they will not receive any replacement
materials.
6. After every team member has presented his/her ideas, have teams each decide
on one bridge to build.
7. The teams are given 30 minutes to create their bridges,
8. Tip: It may be difficult for small hands to figure out the tapping of straws that add
odd angles to each other. Circulate the room to assist teams with any construction
challenges they encounter.

Bridge Testing
· Make a testing station by placing two desks (or tables) approximately 8 inches (20
cm) apart. Place the bridge across the gap between two desks, positioning it with
equal lengths of bridge ends resting on each desk.
· Slowly place one five-peso coin on the top of the bridge.
· Continue to add five-peso coins or books until the bridge fails or noticeably begins
to bend (do not add so much weight that the bridges are ruined.)
· Write the team's total coins on the record or tally sheets.
· A team gaining the greatest number of the coins before the bridge collapsed will be
proclaimed first place, second place and third place and so on.

EGG DROP ACTIVITY GUIDELINES

Objective: The Egg Drop activity is designed to encourage creativity, critical thinking,
and teamwork while testing the ability to protect an egg from damage during a fall from
different heights.
Materials Provided:
· 15 toothpicks per group
· 7 Styrofoam pieces (same sizes) per group
· 1 egg per group
Participants:
1. There will be 1 group per school.
2. Each group will consist of 2 members.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Setup: Assign a location for the egg drop challenge with three designated drop heights:
ground floor (first attempt), 2nd floor (second attempt), and 3rd floor (third attempt).
Rules and Guidelines:
1. Each group is tasked with designing a protective container for the egg using the
provided materials.
2. Groups are allowed to use any method, construct any container, or employ any
strategy they believe will keep the egg from breaking upon impact.
3. Groups must use all the materials provided, but they can cut, shape, or manipulate
the materials as needed.
4. Groups should work within a set time limit for each design and construction phase
(10 minutes).
5. Once the egg containers are completed, they cannot be modified.
NOTE: In every level there will be a part of the styrofoam that will be removed.
1. First Attempt (Ground Floor):
· Groups will take their egg containers to the ground floor for the initial test drop.
· The containers will be dropped from a reasonable height on the ground floor.
· After the drop, judges will examine the egg's condition.
2. Second Attempt (2nd Floor):
· Groups that successfully protected their eggs in the first attempt move on to the
2nd floor.
· The containers will be dropped from the 2nd floor.
· After the drop, judges will examine the egg's condition.
3. Third Attempt (3rd Floor)
· Groups that successfully protected their eggs in the second attempt move on to the
3rd floor.
· The containers will be dropped from the 3rd floor. • After the drop, judges will examine
the egg's condition.
Scoring and Winner:
1 . Groups will be evaluated based on the condition of their eggs after each drop.
2. An undamaged egg after all three attempts will declare the winning group.

TUG OF WAR MECHANICS

Tug of war is a competitive team sport where two teams pull on opposite ends of a rope,
with the goal of pulling the other team across a designated line or marker. Here are the
basic mechanics:
Equipment: Thick rope with a marker or flag in the middle to indicate the center point.
Teams: Two teams, each consisting of 450-500 kg, stand on opposite sides of the
center marker.
Starting Position: Both teams start with the rope taut and parallel to the ground, with
each team gripping the rope firmly. Feet should be braced against the ground to provide
stability.
Objective: The objective is for one team to pull the other across a designated line or
marker on the ground, which is typically marked by a flag or some other visible
indicator.
Winning: The team that successfully pulls the opposing team across the designated
line or marker wins the round.
Rules: Tug of war competitions typically have specific rules regarding the length of the
rope, the size of teams, the duration of each pull, and acceptable tactics. For example,
pulling on any part of the body other than the hands is usually prohibited.
Safety: Safety is crucial in tug of war to prevent injuries. Participants should, and
organizers should ensure the ground is free of hazards. Additionally, referees or officials
should oversee the match to enforce rules and ensure fair play.
