Concept for Grading and Feature Line Generation:

1. Starting Levels: Begin with known elevations from nearby roads or buildings, or extract
levels from XPSURFACE.
2. Water Path Study: Study the surface or proposed riprap for the path of water, paying
attention to existing drainage or terrain conditions.
3. Surface Grading: Start grading from known levels to ensure connectivity across the
project components. This includes linking building edges, roads, footpaths, curbs,
parking lots, and the surrounding landscape (e.g., ponds or petrol stations).
4. Grading Adjustment: Generate contours (1’ and 5’ intervals) to visualize surface
density and adjust slopes for uniformity.
5. Slope Gradients: Ensure slopes fall within a suitable range, typically around 2%, to
promote proper drainage.
6. Open Feature Line for Ditches: Sometimes, it's necessary to leave one end of a feature
line open to form a ditch or riprap structure for consistent grading and surface generation.

How to Create Feature Line and Generate Surface in Civil 3D:

Step 1: Create Feature Line

1. Activate Feature Line Tool:

o Open Civil 3D.
o Go to the Home tab > Create Design panel.
o Click Feature Line or type FL in the command line and press Enter.
2. Choose Style for Feature Line (Optional):
o In the Create Feature Line dialog, select a style for the feature line (e.g.,
Contours, Curb).
3. Set Starting Point:
o Pick a point in the drawing or manually enter coordinates to set the start.
4. Draw Feature Line:
o Click additional points to draw the polyline using Straight or Arc segments.
5. Set Elevation (If applicable):
o Specify elevations manually or automatically by picking an existing surface.
6. Complete Feature Line:
o Press Enter to finish drawing the feature line.

Step 2: Create a Surface from Feature Line

1. Create Surface:
o Go to the Prospector tab > Right-click Surfaces > Create Surface.
o In the dialog box, select TIN Surface, name the surface (e.g., Road Surface), and
select a style (e.g., Contours).
2. Add Feature Line as Breakline:
o Right-click the surface in the Prospector tab > Properties > Add > Breakline.
o In the Add Breaklines dialog, select Standard Breakline and pick the feature
line you created earlier.
3. Rebuild Surface:
o After adding the breakline, right-click the surface in Prospector > Rebuild to
update the surface triangulation.

Step 3: View the Surface

1. Change Surface Style: Adjust the surface style to display Contours, Triangles, or
Wireframe.
2. Surface Update: If any changes are made to the feature line (e.g., elevation
modification), right-click the surface and Rebuild it.
3. Check Triangulation: Use the Object Viewer to inspect the triangulation and confirm
the surface update.

Step 4: Edit Surface and Breaklines (Optional)

 Edit Breaklines: Right-click on the surface in the Prospector tab > Edit Surface > Edit
Breaklines to modify or remove breaklines.
