The Benefits of Formative Assessment on Student Learning

Abstract:
This paper explores how formative assessment enhances student learning by providing continuous feedback, guiding
instruction, and increasing student engagement.

1. Introduction
Formative assessment refers to ongoing evaluations of student understanding during the learning process. Unlike
summative assessments, they are used to inform both teaching and learning in real-time.

2. Findings
Studies show that formative assessments, such as quizzes, peer reviews, and reflections, help identify learning gaps early.
Black and Wiliam (1998) found that students who received regular formative feedback made significantly greater
progress than those who did not.

3. Conclusion
Formative assessments are a powerful tool for improving instruction and supporting student growth. They encourage a
feedback-rich environment that leads to better academic performance.
