MATHEMATICS WORKSHEET-2
TOPIC – SET THEORY Grade:11B
SOLVE THE FOLLOWING:
1. Write the following sets in set builder form
i. 𝐴 = {0, 2, 10, 30, 68}
ii. Write the set of all even integers whose cube is odd.
iii. Write the set of ‘all real numbers which cannot be written as the quotient of two integers’.
2. Two finite sets have ma and n elements. The total number of subsets of first se is 240 more than the total
number of subsets of the second set. Find the values of m and n.
3. Write down all the subsets of the following sets:
i) 𝐴 = {1, 2,3} ii) ∅ iii) 𝐵 = {𝑎, 𝑏}
4. If 𝑋 = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7} and n represents any member of X. Write 𝑛 ∈ 𝑋 but 2𝑛 ∉ 𝑋 as a set.
5. Using properties of sets, show that
i) 𝐴 ∪ (𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) = 𝐴
ii) 𝐴 ∩ (𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) = 𝐴
6. Let A and B be sets. If 𝐴 ∩ 𝑋 = 𝐵 ∩ 𝑋 = ∅ and 𝐴 ∪ 𝑋 = 𝐵 ∪ 𝑋 for some X, then show that 𝐴 = 𝐵.
7. Let A and B be sets. If 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 = 𝐴 ∪ 𝐶 = ∅ and 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 = 𝐴 ∩ 𝐶 for some X, then show that 𝐵 = 𝐶.
8. Draw appropriate Venn diagram for each of the following:
i) (𝐴 ∪ 𝐵)′ ii) 𝐴′ ∩ 𝐵′ iii) (𝐴 ∩ 𝐵)′
9. Let A, B and C are any three sets. Using properties of sets, show that
i) (𝐴 − 𝐵) ∪ (𝐴 − 𝐶) = 𝐴 − (𝐵 ∩ 𝐶)
ii) 𝐴 ∩ (𝐵 − 𝐶) = (𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) − (𝐴 ∩ 𝐶)
10. Let A and B are any three sets. Using properties of sets, show that
i) (𝐴 − 𝐵) ∪ 𝐵 = 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵
ii) (𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) − 𝐴 = 𝐵 − 𝐴
iii) 𝐴 = (𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) ∪ (𝐴 − 𝐵)
iv) 𝐴 ∪ (𝐵 − 𝐴) = 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵
