CE – 325 HYDRAULICS

(Problem Set)

1. Find the width in m of the channel at the back of a suppressed weir using the following data:
H = 30 cm; d = 2.50 m; Q = 0.95 m³/sec.
Consider the velocity of approach and use Cw = 1.90.

A. 3.03 m
B. 3.25 m
C. 2.74 m
D. 2.88 m

2. The length of the crest of the trapezoidal weir is 3 m. If the coefficient of weir for rectangle and triangle are 1.74 and
1.86, respectively. Determine the discharge if the head on the weir is 1 m.

A. 8.89 m³/s
B. 7.76 m³/s
C. 11.42 m³/s
D. 10.30 m³/s

3. A trapezoidal channel from the figure shown with roughness coefficient n = 0.022. Determine the maximum flow rate
in the channel if the minimum perimeter and the slope are 8 m and 1.5 m per kilometer, respectively.

A. 15.69 m³/s
B. 14.03 m³/s
C. 13.54 m³/s
D. 12.78 m³/s
4. A trapezoidal channel with unfinished concrete surfaces (n = 0.014) is to be built to discharge water uniformly at a rate
of 200 ft³/s. For the case of best cross section, determine the bottom width of the channel if the available vertical drop is
10 ft per mile.

A. 4.60 ft
B. 4.50 ft
C. 4.40 ft
D. 4.30 ft

5. For the channel cross section shown in figure, determine the critical depth if the discharge is 16.5 m³/s.

A. 1.41 m
B. 1.52 m
C. 1.65 m
D. 1.78 m

6. Water is flowing in a rectangular channel 2.0 m wide. At a transition section the channel bottom is lowered by h = 0.1
m for a short distance, and then is raised back to the original elevation shown in figure. If y = 1.22 m and Q = 4.8 m³/s,
then, with losses neglected. Find the change in channel width necessary to maintain a horizontal water surface through the
transition.

A. 1.52 m
B. 2.89 m
C. 1.85 m
D. 2.63 m

7. A gravity dam as shown in the figure with a top width 20 m, bottom width 100 m and is 100 m high. Determine the
factor of safety against sliding and overturning moment if μ = 0.45.

A. 1.075 & 2.346

B. 1.315 & 2.204
C. 1.247 & 2.436
D. 1.125 & 2.074
8. Neglect viscous effects, assume uniform velocity profiles, and find the horizontal force component acting on the
obstruction shown in figure.

A. 1.65 kN
B. 1.86 kN
C. 2.18 kN
D. 1.99 kN

9. Water is flowing at the rate of 300 lit/sec from A to E as shown in the figure. Compute the flow in each pipe in lit/sec
and the total head loss. Assume f = 0.025 for all pipes.

10. Determine the flow in each pipe connecting the reservoirs as shown.
