Iliad Short Question

Book 1
 Who started the quarrel between Achilles and Agamemnon?
Ans: It was Apollo, son of Zeus and Leto, who started the feud because he was furious with
Agamemnon for not respecting his priest Chryses. So Apollo inflicted a deadly plague on
Agamemnon’s army and destroyed his men.

 With what did Chryses come to the Greeks’ swift ships to recover his captured daughter?
Ans: He brought with him an immense ransom and carried the emblems of the Archer-god
Apollo on a golden staff in his hands.

 What wish did Chryses grant from Apollo?

Ans: Chryses granted a wish from Apollo of making the Greeks pay with his (Apollo) arrows,
if ever he built a temple that pleased Apollo, and burnt him offerings of the fat thighs of
bulls or goats.

 For how many days, did Apollo rain the arrows of death death down upon the greek army?
Ans: 9 Days.

 On which day, did Achilles summon the men to get a solution from Apollo’s plauge?
Ans: On the 10th day of Apollo’s plauge, Achilles summoned the men to assembly.

 When the Greeks were suffering and dying because of Apollo's plague, Achilles was urged
by Hera to call a meeting. What was the first idea he had?
Ans: He wanted to ask the soothsayer Calchas what to do.

 When the Greeks were suffering and dying because of Apollo's plague, Achilles was urged
by Hera to call a meeting. What was the SECOND idea he had?
Ans: To give Chryseis back to her father.

 Who is Calchus?
Ans: Calchas, son of Thestor, is a prophet who can see past, present and future through his
second sight – a gift he owed to Apollo – that had guided the Greek ships to Ilium.

 What did Calchus reveal about the reason behind Apollo’s plague?
Ans: Calchus revealed that Apollo had found no fault with any broken vows or failures in
their rites, but as Agamemnon insulted his priest, did not free his daughter and refused the
ransom – that was why Apollo made them suffer and would continue to do so.

 What did they have to do to get released from Apollo’s deadly plauge?
Ans: Apollo will not release the Greeks from that loathsome plague till they give the dark-
eyed girl Chryseis back to her father, without recompense or ransom, and send a sacred
offering to the priest’s town of Chryse.

 What is Agamemnon's main problem with Calchas?

Ans: He thinks his prophecies are always against him.
 Agamemnon agrees to give Chryseis back to her father, but why does he think he deserves
something in her place?
Ans: He is the king of all the men and he thinks that if he has no prize it will be dishonorable.

 Agamemnon gets angry when Achilles suggests that he give Chryseis back and wait until
they destroy Troy to get another prize. What does Agamemnon threaten to do?
Ans: He will NOT wait until Troy falls, if they won't GIVE him a prize, he will come and help
himself to Achilles’ prize, or Ajax’s, or maybe he will walk off with Odysseus.

 What favour does Achilles ask of his mother?

Ans: To ask Zeus for revenge on the Achaean army.

 Why is Zeus reluctant to punish the Achaeans?

Ans: Because his wife, white-armed Hera, favours the Greeks.

 Whose son was Achilles?

alongside the great warrior in Phthia, under the guardianship of Peleus.
