SECTION A READING – 10 MARKS
I Read the passage given below (10MARKS)
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the concept of "sustainable living." It refers
to making lifestyle choices that reduce an individual’s or society’s use of the Earth’s natural
resources. The goal of sustainable living is to minimize environmental impact by altering methods of
energy consumption, transportation, diet, and overall consumption.
One of the most effective ways to practice sustainable living is by reducing dependence on fossil
fuels. Switching to renewable energy sources like solar or wind power can significantly lower
greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, adopting energy-efficient appliances and turning off unused
electrical devices are simple yet powerful actions.
Sustainable living also extends to transportation. Using public transport, cycling, or carpooling not
only saves money but also reduces air pollution. Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining popularity as
they produce fewer emissions compared to traditional fuel-based cars.
Another important aspect is adopting a plant-based diet or at least reducing meat consumption. The
meat industry contributes heavily to deforestation and water pollution. Choosing locally produced and
organic foods further supports the environment by reducing transportation emissions and promoting
biodiversity.
Moreover, sustainable living includes mindful consumption. This involves buying only what is
necessary, avoiding single-use plastics, recycling, and supporting eco-friendly brands. Individuals are
encouraged to repair and reuse items instead of discarding them after minimal use.
Governments, NGOs, and businesses play an important role in promoting sustainable habits, but the
responsibility ultimately lies with individuals. Small changes in daily routines, when adopted
collectively, can lead to significant environmental benefits. As the planet faces critical challenges
such as climate change, pollution, and resource depletion, sustainable living is not just an option—it
is a necessity.
