Step-by-Step Guide: Railway Car Simulation & Kinematic Gauge Analysis in Simpack

1. Start a New Project in Simpack

Open Simpack Pre and create a new model. Go to File > New > Model. Define the project name and save it in your

working directory.

2. Define Bodies (Vehicle Components)

Create rigid bodies for:

- Car body

- Two bogies

- Four wheelsets

Use the 'Body' tool to assign mass, center of gravity, and inertia to each component.

3. Define Joints and Degrees of Freedom

Use:

- Revolute joints for wheelset to bogie connections

- Translational joints for suspension links

- Spherical joints if needed

Ensure the car body is coupled to bogies via secondary suspension.

4. Assign Force Elements (Suspensions)

Use the 'Force Element' tool to define:

- Primary suspension (wheelset to bogie)

- Secondary suspension (bogie to car body)

Set stiffness, damping, and preload values as needed.

5. Model Wheel-Rail Contact

Go to Contact Settings and enable wheel-rail contact model.

- Load wheel profile (e.g., S1002)

- Load rail profile (e.g., UIC60)

Run a static or slow-speed simulation to record body and wheel positions relative to gauge.

8. Configure Simulation Settings

Go to Simulation > Settings:

- Set simulation type: transient or quasi-static

- Input initial speed (e.g., 80 km/h)

- Set total simulation time and time step.

9. Run the Simulation

Press the 'Run' button in Simpack Pre.

- Monitor for errors in constraints or contacts

- Validate motion is as expected (use animation).
