Unit 1 - Poetry (Poems prescribed):

i. Shakespeare - ‘Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind’


ii. John Donne - ‘Death, be not Proud’
iii. John Milton - ‘On His Blindness’
iv. Alexander Pope - ‘Ode on Solitude’
v. William Wordsworth - ‘A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal’
vi. John Keats - ‘Ode to Autumn’

Unit 2 - George Bernard Shaw, Arms and the Man

Unit 3 - Figures of Speech:


Simile, Metaphor, Alliteration, Onomatopoeia, Antithesis, Irony, Pun,
Climax, Anticlimax, Metonymy, Synecdoche, Exaggeration.

Unit 4 - Literary Forms:


Sonnet, Ode, Lyric, Elegy, Epic, Verse Satire, Dramatic Monologue,
Tragedy, Comedy, Comedy of Manners, Absurd Drama, Problem Play,
Historical Novel, Regional Novel, Picaresque Novel.

Distribution of Marks (for End Semester Examination):


i. 02 Long Answer Type Questions (to be answered in approx. 500 words) - 2 x 15 = 30
One long answer type question with an alternative from each of the first two units will be set.

ii. 04 Short Answer Type Questions (to be answered in approx. 250 words) - 4 x 10 = 40
One short answer type question / Explanation (in case of units containing poems) from
each of the four units will be set. The examinee will be required to answer any two
questions.
iii. Multiple Choice Questions (10) - 1 x 10 = 10
Altogether fifteen Multiple Choice Questions will be set for this section. The examinee will
be required to answer any ten.

Semester IV

ENG-GE II - GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION

Unit 1 - Common Errors based on Subject-Verb Agreement, Time & Tense,


Preposition, Phrasal Verb, Adjective, Adverb, Use of Noun

Unit 2 - Synonyms; Antonyms; Homonyms; Single Word Substitution; Idioms &


Phrases; Word Formation (Prefix & Suffix)

Unit 3 - Comprehension

Unit 4 - Précis

Distribution of Marks (for End Semester Examination):


Unit 1 : Questions based on components of the unit with alternatives - 25 Marks

Unit 2 : Questions based on components of the unit with alternatives - 25 Marks

Unit 3 : Comprehension of an unseen passage - 15 Marks

Unit 4 : Précis of an unseen passage - 15 Marks
