Assignment 1

The document is an assignment for a course on the dynamics of structures, focusing on free vibration analysis of single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems. It includes five questions that involve calculations related to mass, spring stiffness, natural frequency, damping, and equivalent spring constants in various structural scenarios. Each question references figures that illustrate the systems being analyzed.

Dynamics of structures – CE F432

Assignment #1-“Free vibration analysis of SDOF systems”

Q.01-The mass of a block shown in Figure1 is 100 kg and the spring stiffness is 1000 N/m. A
bullet weighting 250 gm is fired at a speed of 20 m/s into the block and becomes embedded in
the block. Determine the resulting undamped motion of the block.

Q.02-A braced portal frame is shown in Figure 2. Beams and columns are of concrete of M25
grade. Size of columns is 300 x 400 mm. Area of steel brace is 10 cm 2 and length is 5 m.
Determine the natural frequency of vibration of the system.

Q.03-Calculate the natural frequency for the vibration of mass m shown in Figure 3. Member AE
is rigid with a hinge at C and a supporting spring of stiffness k at D.

Q.04-Consider the SDOF system shown in Figure 1 where m = 20 kg, c = 125 N-s/m, k1 = 3000
N/m, k2 = 500 N/m, k3 = 1200 N/m. Determine whether the system is overdamped, critically
damped or underdamped.

Q.5-A machine weighting 1000 lb is mounted through springs having a total stiffness k = 2000
lb/in to a simple supported beam as shown in Figure 5. Determine the equivalent spring constant
ke, the equivalent damping coefficient ce , and equivalent mass me for the system assumed to have
10% critical damping. Neglect the mass of the beam. EI = 107 lb-in2, L = 40 in
