Spider diagrams and existing products

From this page i have found out that many existing products for organisation that i have found were made out of wood so i will take this into account as this
means many people like a wooden style and simple sleek designs, colourful designs are also popular however they are ,mainly made of plastic and this is
bad for the environment. They also have spaces for phones and this is important as many people these days use phones whilst working or studying at
home however i would need to design it in a way that it will not become a distraction for my client.

From this page, I have found out from this that my client mainly struggles with organisation of stationery getting distracted by their phone whilst
studying and they sometimes feel unmotivated to work. I have also found what colours textures and materials they like so i will try to stick to the colour
scheme of pink and turquoise with a smooth finish and this will help me choose what materials to use. I also now know my budget of £20 and will use
this to help me decide the cost of materials.

The poster is from my clients work area, it’s main colour is a vibrant pink as this is one of my

bright pink but this time with some purple as well. The poster has a realistic feeling to it
when looking at it due to the rich colours used. It is also a poster of encouragement as it
contains a quote from coco chanel. From this i can deduce that my client would like a
product in the style that Morag Myerscough uses as they use bright colours and words of
encouragement in their projects

My design brief is to design and create a product to help and improve my clients organisation on their desk when they are studying or working from home. This is important
as my client sometimes gets stressed. My product will fix this as it is known that when you are disorganised as our brains like order and when thing are not in order it can
drain your cognitive functions. Another problem is that my client is also unproductive at times and gets distracted easily. My product could help with these as when you are
organised you are more productive as you know where things are so you don't have to worry about where they are so you can solely focus on working it also limits
distractions as you are away from you work for a lesser amount of time.My product will have to be spacious as my client often runs out of space for storage however it will
need to fit in the corner of their desk as they dont have much space on their desk. My product would also have to have the right anthropometrics so a hand can reach into the
bottom of the product as smaller stationery items like rubbers or paper clips may fall in there.

Design 2 Abstract
pop art
design from
my first
design

What i did: My initial idea was to create a puzzle box for

organisation that wouldn’t look like any sort of organiser
to the normal eye whilst still maintaining a fun modern
pop art look to it. My influence for this was the puzzle box
shown on the slide however the colour scheme doesn't
fit my design spec as it isn't colourful enough. So i then
would decide to use a lighter wood if I were to make it so
that it can be painted on easily with alternating pink and
turquoise on the stripes. I would also then simplify the
design as the original product would not be long enough
to store longer pieces of stationary for example pencils.I
then got further inspiration from the board game scrabble
and would implement an interchangeable letter and
emoji pieces so my client could have further
personalisation on the product as shown on my 3D
designs that i then further annotated on paper.
For the design on the inside i then carried forward one of
my initial ideas from my first design to include
overlapping circles as in my design to intimidate an
zoomed in area of a pop art picture.

Client feedback:
My client likes the shape and idea of the product however
feels like the interchangeable words may get messy or
lost and the circles on the inside do not look good and
would prefer smaller more pop art style

What i have done: My initial idea for the shape of the product came from a visit i took to central london where i saw many old telephone boxes around the house of
parliament. However i changed the colour scheme to fit my clients wants and i included a system for an interchangeable drawer knob that will be fixated with a nut and
bolt so my client can easily change it out. For safety reasons i decided instead of using glass which can easily break i would instead use an opaque acrylic as it is a
thermoforming plastic so it can be recycled and reused at the end of the products life. The product could also be used to store various items due to its differently sized
drawers it could be used to organise items like jewelry etc.

Client feedback: My client Doesn’t like the shape of the product as it has wasted space at the top that they would have used otherwise. They also dislike the over
saturation of colour and wants the colours to be more subtle and clean.

Centre Number: 61361 GCSE NEA 8552

My inspiration came from when i was Design 4
making breakfast and i had the idea of
making some sort of toaster like
mechanism to limit distractions from a
phone when working. I then
measured my clients phone and
worked out that if u wanted the
phone to be horizontal it would need 150mm
to be at least 160 mm in height and
over 80mm in length with a width of
more than 10mm. This will make it so 70mm
none of the phone is visible to limit
distractions. The holder could either
be horizontal or vertical depending on
the desk space that my client would
have. In this case my client said they
would prefer if the produce was
vertical as it would take up less
space on their desk. This prototype
was a good design for a phone
storage device however it wouldn't be
able to hold any stationary and that
is important to my design
specifications as the product is it
wouldn't fit my clients needs.

Client feedback: My client liked the

idea of the prototype however they
said how they think it could easily fall
over and therefore damaging their
phone. They were also worried about
if their phone would still work in the
product if they had gotten an upgrade
which i had overlooked

Organiser component- Testing phase

When creating my prototype based off the design my client liked

the most i first began to develop the actual organisation area by
finding a way to make it modular so this will further the lifespan
of the product as it something breaks it can be replaced using a
similar or a different type of organiser. My first design was a
base plate that had simple cut out holes in to so my client can
organise their stationary, For this design i removed the overhead
phone holder and added a slot by the side of the organiser
where the phone could fit in instead. Whilst i was making this
first design i noticed that it created a lot of waste products
which is not good for a large scale project or for the environment
as it is a waste of useful material and money. So then i created a
0 waste design that instead of using cut outs on plywood to
store the stationary it used cut out slits that allowed for the slots
to be lifted to store stationary and then put back down when it is
not in use. However this design wouldn't work on plywood
which was my original idea however I then thought to use
polypropylene which is a thermoforming material so it can be
recycled at the end of the products life. I then created my idea in
various colours this allows for my client to easily change the
aesthetics of the product and at an industrial level extra colours
could be purchased to give the clients more colour options.

Centre Number: 61361 GCSE NEA 8552

Handle- Testing phase
For my product it needs a handle for the phone holder for it to be able to
move. I first looked around the workshop to find any inspiration from
various machines and existing products in the room and made sure they
would be able to work according to how my product moves. I then made
models of the different handles to see how they would work in a more
practical sense. The different handles i looked at was a handle on a pillar
drill and a rotating handle on on a sanding belt. However i immediately saw
an issue with the rotating handle as if i wanted to make the handle
comfortable enough to grip the product would have to be elevated off the
table otherwise the product would hit the table. After this i had then
decided to make some models based off the pillar drill handle,
implementing different parts of the handle into my idea. I started off with a
handle that used the same design of a bulbous ending as the pillar drill
however if i had used this in my product it would be hard to replicate the
shape out of wood as that i the material my product will be made of, So i
had then made 2 variations of a simpler design that resembles more of a
wind up toy however my client had said that they didn’t like the way the
handle looked as it was basic and they wasted something different. Then i
had thought back to my designer influence Morag Myerscough and to one
of her installments in central london ‘Atoll’ Where she used colourful
circles on metal poles on top of the installment. I was then inspired by this
and then created a handle based off it. I first started with an initial idea of
how the handle was going to piece together and landed on doing a dado
joint, where the circle simply slots into the shaft and is held together by
friction and a some wood glue witch is biodegradable. I had then created a
second model which used vinyl to add some colour to the handle in a target
like pattern. Since the vinyl can be separated from the wood this still allows
for the colour to be changed if by client wants to change the aesthetics of
the product, moreover the wood to be recycled at the end of its life

Centre Number: 61361 GCSE NEA 8552

Mechanism- Testing phase

When designing my prototype i decided to change my idea of a separate layer to hold a phone to a simpler holder that was
perpendicular to the organizer instead of parallel to it. I first started with a simple (Linear) lever however this wasn't very
effective as the lever would not hold up the weight of a phone due to the lack of resistance. After some careful rethinking i
had an idea to create a reverse linkage motion storage system that would hold down a platform that would be spring loaded
to lift up the phone after the arms of the leaver were removed. After i had created the model for what the linkage would look
like i then ran into a problem of finding a way to attach the springs to the base and what sort of spring i should use so i had
to re-think my choices. I then modeled a cam based of a 4mm dowel however the dowel had a slight tolerance as i used
some digital caliper to work out the diameter and it came out to 3.92 mm however i had to make the hole 4mm as the
tolerances on different wooden dowels could change especially it was on an industrial scale. I chose to make an oval cam
that would raise the phone by around 20 cm due to the way i created it. I then used a slide with a 10 mm square that fits the
follower that has a 10mm side length. Once i had created the model i noticed that when the cam turns one side lifts before
the other where the cam touches first. I couldn't find a way to solve this issue so i then had to go back to the basics and
modified my original idea and included 2 stoppers within the wooded leaver that would then stop the phone from going
back down once it had been lifted and pushed into the designated sockets. This was my final development for my final
prototype as it was a simple design that could be replicated on an industrial level with ease and it requires a few materials
that are all biodegradable so it helps keeping our environment clean.

Centre Number: 61361 GCSE NEA 8552

Aesthetics- Testing phase

My client had chosen a sleek simple white design on the outside

but a fun pop art style of colour on the inside. So i had decided to
use this to develop different aesthetic options and colours that
will then further be used to colour coordinate different parts of the
product so if it was on an industrial scale any of the pieces that
break can easily be replaced. I decided to experiment on (scrap
pieces of plywood) with different forms of dots and holes by:
creating a vinyl template and making 3 separate types of design
where i use the dots themself, another where i use the waste
material from the dots and the last when i used different depths of
engravement. When i used the vinyl dots it was a tedious task as
they are small and could easily get lost, This wouldn't be efficient
on an industrial level as it wouldn't be worth the time to stick on
all of the dots. When i used the waste from the dots it was
extremely quick and easy and i could change the colours by
changing the colour of the background. My final idea was to
engrave and this added texture to the product however it didn't
ann any colour but only made the wood darker due to the laser
cutter. As explained in previous slides, i will also have positive
messages on my product which i will use vinyl for as it allows for
me to portray the message whilst implementing a pop art style
and colour. So therefore I have now decided for my final design
that i will use both the vinyl dots and the remaining vinyl as this
reduces waste of material and this can be done in a range of
colours to fit my clients needs, alongside with positive quotes
made in a colourful vinyl .

Final prototype breakdown

This is a final visualization of my product and as shown in the CAD model

I have finalised the aesthetics and function of my product. So as seen in Coloured vinyl dots on varnished wood
the video my product will be mainly a varnished wood (lighter in colour
than the one in the 3D model as there wasn't an accurate wood
available) to give it a simple and sleek design with the interiors of the
product being painted white and a pop of coloured dots to replicate a pop
art style. This paired with the interchangeable organiser allows for the
aesthetics and look of the product to change at my client's will. This gives
my client more choices and therefore extends the product's life as it can
fit into any colour scheme and environment so instead of getting rid of
the product if it doesn't match the room, a simple part can be easily
replaced to fit it. For the functions, I decided to make the physical holder
modular so the organiser can be removed to allow for more storage
space to fit my client's specific needs if they need more of an open
storage space than a constricting amount of space to organise. However,
even with the main organisation piece in my product, I have still allowed
for extra space for items like calculators and other miscellaneous items to
be kept in; my client may have items of varying sizes that may not fit in
the spaces made for the average-sized stationery. I was also inspired by a
designer that goes by Morag Myerscough, and I added motivational
quotes for inspiration and motivation for my client. These would also be
in bright colours similar to Morag’s style. Finally, with the phone holder
part of my product, I had settled on a simple mechanism that can easily
raise the phone and keep it elevated, and then have it safely decline back
down and be hidden away from my client. This is shown in previous
slides but uses a simple platform to raise the phone. However due to
sourcing and availability difficulties i was limited to a small range of
colours so i has to infer back to my client so she can choose a different
colour palate and aqua and gold was then chosen.

Testing the phone mechanism

On my final product my mechanism worked well as it was able to adjust the high of the phone and conceal the majority of the device. It
worked well as i tested it with phones and cases of various heights, thicknesses and weights. The leaver was able to hold the weight of all
the phones that were tested which shows that it will be able to hold the weight and size of various modern phones. As seen in photo 1 on
the far left the phone was held up by my product and in the photo to the left it can be seen fully down. However there were some negatives
that could have been worked out if i had more time for example the length of the lever could be attoned to be shorter so it would fit in my
clients length requirements.

Evaluation of the Design Brief
My design brief is to design and create a product to help and improve my clients organisation on their desk when they are studying or working from home. This is important
as my client sometimes gets stressed. My product will fix this as it is known that when you are disorganised as our brains like order and when thing are not in order it can
drain your cognitive functions. Another problem is that my client is also unproductive at times and gets distracted easily. My product could help with these as when you are
organised you are more productive as you know where things are so you don't have to worry about where they are so you can solely focus on working it also limits
distractions as you are away from you work for a lesser amount of time. My product will have to be spacious as my client often runs out of space for storage however it will
need to fit in the corner of their desk as they dont have much space on their desk. My product would also have to have the right anthropometrics so a hand can reach into the
bottom of the product as smaller stationery items like rubbers or paper clips may fall in there.

My client was pleased with the overall outcome of the product during the short time that they were able to test the product. They had said that it had helped them keep
organised especially with their art supplies as they usually are scattered on the desk or just generally disorganised. They had said that the size of the organiser was
beneficial as the yhad many items that were needed to be organised however they were slightly disappointed with the colour scheme as it wasnt what they wanted
however they liked the fact that the colours on the organiser was interchangeable allowed them to have some sort of further customisation to their product. The positive that
i had personally found with my product was that the mechanism of the phone had worked smoothly with no problems so this limits distractions due to the majority of the
phone being hidden. Another positive was that i was able to maintain a modern sleek look on the outside with the varnished wood and the blue and gold on the inside
contrasting this to achieve a pop art style that was in favour of my client and this was inspired by Morag Myerscough who inspired the idea for the quote and colour scheme i
used. However my product still could have been improved as my clients phone wasn't fully covered so they were still tempted to use their phone. If i could further develop
my product i would make the phone holder taller so it completely covers the phone and then further adding a cover on top made out of polypropylene that is scored so it can
bend freely, so it is able to open without needing any hinges to complicate the product. Furthermore i could have added a separate compartment to store the extra organisers
as they look out of place as they have no designated area to be stored. Overall my product was helpful and worked as intended but for it to be made it a commercial setting
there will have to be some changes made to the product for example some jigs to be made and the nesting of the CAD for the pieces are nested properly.

Evaluation of the Design Specification
Specification Evaluation Possible future improvements

My product must be under £20 in To reduce the cost of my product i used plywood which is a man made However since i had used a laser cutter this is quite
materials and labor cost wood so it is cheaper than using normal pine wood and stronger as it is expensive to run and use so i combated this by nesting
a composite. Also to give it the look of pine wood i used varnish on it however i could have wasted less material if i maximised
which gave it a richer more expensive look. my nesting as i could have added more parts to the same
plank of wood. Another way i could have reduced my
costs is by making my product smaller as this would
cause less overall material to be used therefore saving
money.

My product must me My materials were sourced from countries in the EU specifically However due to limitations i wasn't able to source all my
environmentally friendly Sweden and the UK and the woods used were FSC certified so this products entirely from the uk or on a local scale due to
means that all the wood came from legal logging and had reforestation availability and costs yet if i did this would further reduce

transport was needed to deliver the materials meaning less CO2 Is more environmentally friendly as it had already been
released than if i bought it from a distant country, making it extracted and the crude oil wouldn't have to be extracted
environmentally friendly. harming the environment.

My product must be or under a My product had a base area of 100x320mm so i did go over my If i could further change the product i would create a way
200x300mm area specification limit in the length dimension which makes the product to store these on the back of the product so it would add
larger than it should have been however this was done to to the width instead of the length as the width was under

that were added for aesthetic reasons. However this was discussed
with my client ad they had said that this minor flaw was manageable.

My product must be colourful but I believe i accomplished this to the best of my ability as i maintained a However in some areas where i sublimated varnish had
not tacky certain element of professionalism and a clean sleek look whilst adding managed to leak on it slightly fading out the colour i
a pop of colour throughout the product. I had achieved this by originally wanted so in the future i would make sure to

Specification Evaluation Improvement

My product must be safe My product was predominantly safe as it wasnt that heavy that it could However my product still had sharp edges which could
injure someone if it is knocked off a desk and lands on their feet to cause harm or just be uncomfortable to my client or
harm then. Yet it still haves enough weight to not be easily hit off a anyone using it as their hands could get caught when
desk whilst full. using the product. To fix this problem i would sand the
corners of my procust to rounden them out to eliminate
this problem.

Needs to hold a phone My product was able to hold and hide a phone from my clients However if i had more time i would have designed the
immediate eyesight. This was done to reduce the distractions that my phone holder component to be able to have phones of
client would have whilst working but also allow the client to see if their various sizes. This will make it so it is still able to be used
phone is in the product which could reduce the stress of misplacing if my client upgrades their phone it may be too tall to fit
their phone. inside of the product. Without this change this will cause
a limited lifespan to my product as it wouldn't be able to
compensate for different phones so they product will be
deemed useless.

Biodegradable at the end of it life The majority of my product is biodegradable as my product was mainly If i had done more research or been able to change the
wood which was held together using wood glue which can naturally product for the future i would used a water based paint or
degrade and break down. However i had used acrylic paint and another biodegradable counterpart which is
polypropylene which are both non biodegradable due to them being or biodegradable so if it isn't disposed of properly it will still
containing oils and plastics. degrade without harming the environment.
However the polypropylene can be separated from the product as oly
glue was used however the acrylic paint could not as it was painted
onto the majority of my product.

Separate sections My product had various different pre set sections for different sized However a possible improvement i could have made was
stationary and a general storage area for items of various sizes so my to create organisers with different amount and size holes
client can store a variety of items in it so my client had more of a variety when it comes to the
main organiser element.
