Media and information literacy are vital for every citizen to realize his rights
to freedom of information. These also aim to enable individuals to think
critically about the media and the information they consume by engaging in
a process of inquiry. Media nowadays, is one of the most powerful tools that
could effectively transfer information and effect change in today’s modern
world. The fast development of media in our country has resulted to positive
as well as negative impacts.

Thus, in this lesson, you are expected to accomplish the following learning
objectives.
1. Identify opportunities and challenges in media and information in the
economic, educational, social, and political dimensions.
2. Realize opportunities and challenges in media and information.
3. Discuss and evaluate how media and information affect change; and
4. Cite recent examples of the power of media and information to affect
change.

Exercise 1: PICTURE ANALYSIS

In this activity you will analyze a picture. You will be given pictures about the
opportunities and challenges in media and information in the economic,

The message of the picture is that the media industry in the Philippines is rapidly digitizing.
This has led to a number of changes, including:

 The rise of social media platforms as a major source of news and information.
 The growth of e-commerce and online banking.
 The increasing importance of digital marketing and advertising.
 The emergence of new media formats, such as streaming video and podcasts.
3. Is the situation about media depicted in the picture true in the Philippines? Why or why not?

Yes, the situation about media depicted in the picture is true in the Philippines. The country
has one of the highest internet penetration rates in the world, and social media is extremely
popular. According to a 2022 study by Hootsuite and We Are Social, 92% of Filipinos are
active internet users, and 89% use social media. This has led to a shift in the way that
people consume media. In the past, Filipinos were more likely to get their news and
information from traditional media outlets, such as television, radio, and newspapers.
However, today, social media is the primary source of news and information for many
Filipinos.

Yes, the picture shows both a challenge and an opportunity for media and information.

 On the one hand, the rise of social media and digital media has led to a decline in the
popularity of traditional media outlets. This has made it more difficult for traditional media
outlets to generate revenue and produce high-quality journalism.

On the other hand, the digitization of the media industry has created new opportunities for
media and information. For example, the rise of social media has made it easier for people
to share their own stories and perspectives, and it has also given rise to new forms of
journalism, such as citizen journalism.

Overall, the picture shows that the media industry in the Philippines is undergoing a rapid
transformation. This transformation poses both challenges and opportunities for media and
information.

In addition to the above, I would also add that the digitization of the media industry has also
made it more important than ever to be able to critically evaluate the information that we
consume. This is because there is a lot of misinformation and disinformation circulating
online. It is important to be able to identify reliable sources of information and to be aware
of the potential biases of different media outlets.

Exercise 4: INFOGRAPHICS
Search and evaluate how media and information affect change in your society.
Then, create an infographic showing what you have searched. And write a
brief explanation.
