Field Log #3

1. The student participated in an in-person interview with a potential new veteran resident at

Veterans Haven North. The veteran's file indicated a history of racist and violent

behavior, so a safety plan was put in place. The interviewing case manager and the

student agreed on a code word that the case manager would use if the situation escalated,

signaling the student to get help. However, the interview proceeded smoothly, with the

veteran being polite throughout the discussion. The student observed the process without

asking questions but engaged in active listening. After the interview, the veteran was

admitted, and the student thanked the case manager for the opportunity to observe the

meeting.

2. This experience involved key social work principles, including safety planning,

maintaining professional boundaries, and active listening. The case manager

demonstrated important skills in engagement, de-escalation, and nonjudgmental

communication. The student observed how professionalism is maintained even when

working with individuals who have difficult or troubling histories, reflecting the core

values of dignity, respect, and service.

3. This activity demonstrated the importance of being prepared for challenging situations

and highlighted the complexity of working with clients with violent or discriminatory

pasts. It also illustrated how social work professionals balance safety and care, providing
services while minimizing risks to staff and other clients. The interaction reflected
