Advanced Prepositions

I. NOTES

A. Definition of a Preposition

A preposition is a word that links a noun or pronoun to other words in the sentence. It usually
shows time, place, direction, cause, manner, or instrument.

B. Types of Prepositions

Type Function Examples

Time Shows when something after, before, during, by, until, since
happens

Place/Position Shows where something is above, below, beside, between, among,


behind

Direction/Movement Shows movement into, onto, through, across, towards

Cause/Purpose Shows reason because of, due to, for

Manner/Instrument Shows how or with what with, by, like

Phrasal Prepositions Prepositions in phrases in front of, in spite of, with regard to
II. EXAMPLES

1. Time:

o She arrived before noon.

o We have lived here since 2010.

2. Place:

o The cat is under the table.

o The school is between the hospital and the post office.

3. Direction:

o He ran into the room.

o The bird flew across the sky.

4. Cause:

o The match was postponed due to rain.

o He stayed home because of the storm.

5. Manner/Instrument:

o She painted the wall with a brush.

o They traveled by car.

6. Phrasal Prepositions:

o In spite of the rain, they continued hiking.

o With regard to your question, I will reply tomorrow.

Exercise A: Fill in the blanks with suitable prepositions
