II. INTRODUCTION
Language revitalization is a fairly recent subfield of linguistics that is concerned
with halting and reversing the extinction of languages. Language extinction has
increased rapidly in the last one hundred years, and occurs now at a staggering rate.
It is estimated that 50 percent to 90 percent of the world’s six thousand to seven
thousand languages will no longer be spoken by the end of this century.
Economic and societal pressures often drive the decline of indigenous languages,
compelling speakers to shift to dominant languages for better economic and social
opportunities. This shift can be attributed to several factors:
MTB-MLE:
This program, enshrined in law, promotes the use of mother tongues as the medium
of instruction in early education, aiming to make learning more accessible and
effective for children.
Government Support:
Community Involvement:
Many efforts target indigenous languages, which are often facing extinction due to
various factors, including language shift and assimilation.
Revitalization efforts often focus on creating new spaces for language use, such as
in media, work, and community events, to increase the language's vitality.
Language-Specific Approaches:
Revitalization programs are often tailored to the specific needs and contexts of each
language.
