Suspended Ceiling Method Statement

1.0 OBJECTIVE
To describe the procedure for installing suspended ceiling systems for the buildings under
the contract.

2.0 SCOPE
To install suspended ceilings in the buildings at the designated project site areas.

3.0 REFERENCE
3.1 Project Approved Architectural Drawings
3.2 Relevant National or Local Construction Specifications
3.3 Manufacturer’s Recommendations
3.4 Applicable International Standards for Suspended Ceilings (e.g., fire performance,
installation methods)

4.0 PROCEDURE

4.1 MATERIAL APPROVAL

Approval of ceiling materials, such as framing sections, ceiling boards, panels, etc., should be
obtained from the project engineer before proceeding with ceiling works. All approved
material samples should be available on-site for reference.

4.2 APPROVAL OF SHOP DRAWINGS

Approval from the project engineer shall be obtained for shop drawings showing the
general layout, support framing, and installation details, including lay-in, hanger, and
support details.

4.3 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS OF CEILING WORKS

The suspended ceiling works shall be taken up only when:
- The building is weather tight.
- The wet trades have completed their work.
- All works above the ceiling, such as ductwork, pipe work, and electrical work, have been
installed, tested, inspected, and approved by the project engineer.
- The positions of light fittings, diffusers, and similar items have been checked.
- The positions of access panels have been confirmed with the project engineer.
- All services have been installed.
- Fastenings and supports installed by others are rigid and secure in place.
- Installation of other services does not touch the back of the ceiling.

4.4 LAY-IN TYPE SUSPENDED CEILINGS

4.4.1 MATERIALS APPROVALS

The lay-in material shall be tile, plank, or strips and shall be approved by the project
engineer.
The lay-in material must have fire performance when tested in accordance with applicable
fire safety standards. A test certificate for this purpose shall be submitted for the review and
approval of the project engineer.

4.4.2 INSTALLATION
- The ceiling works shall be installed within 3 mm of the required level, measured over a
distance of 3 m.
- The ceiling tiles shall be set out so that the soffits are level, free from undulations and
lipping, with all lines and joints straight and parallel to walls unless otherwise shown.
- They are symmetrical about the centerlines of the roof or space, beginning with a tile or
joint line as required, avoiding narrow tiles at the perimeter edges.
- All junctions between the ceiling and walls, and between the ceiling and columns, shall be
finished with perimeter edge trim, fixed at a maximum of 450 mm centers.
- Additional hanging supports shall be provided between the floor or roof structure above
and the suspended ceiling at all access panels, light fittings, diffusers, etc. The lay-in
material shall be accurately cut to accommodate all such fittings. Under no circumstances
shall the lay-in material support any fitting.
- Care shall be taken to ensure that the tiles and strip ceilings are kept clean if subsequently
removed for access to services, inspection, or remedial work.

4.5 FIXED TYPE SUSPENDED CEILINGS

4.5.1 GENERAL
Gypsum board will be used for fixed-type suspended ceilings unless otherwise indicated in
the drawings.

4.5.2 MATERIALS
Gypsum wallboard shall comply with general industry standards, having one face finished
for direct decoration.
The edge profiles of wallboard shall be:
- "Tapped" for smooth seamless jointing.
- "Beveled" for V-jointing.
- "Square" for stippled textured coatings, corner strip jointing, or plaster.

4.5.3 INSTALLATION
- Complete setting out of the ceiling area for lines and levels must be carried out before
framing works, and the levels must be approved by the project engineer.
- Adequate preparation is to be made for the attachment of hangers and fasteners, and for
the support and incorporation of flush-mounted and recessed fittings and services
components.
- The ceiling system shall be installed following the manufacturer’s recommendations and
relevant installation standards unless agreed otherwise with the project engineer.

5.0 RECORDS
The following records must be maintained:
- Materials approval.
- Checklists.
- Inspection reports.
