1 INTRODUCTION
Dear Student

We are pleased to welcome you to the teaching practice module. Teaching practice is your
professional development and an integral component of the Initial Teacher Education (ITE)
Programme. This ITE programme is an accredited requirement of teacher education as mandated
by the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications (MRTEQ).

This tutorial letter contains Assignment 01 and important information on teaching practice
requirements.

PLEASE NOTE:

All enquiries regarding your placement and other TP admin-related matters should be
directed to the Teaching Practice Office coordinator of the province in which you are
planning your placement.

Please do not contact the TPO with queries related to assessments, workbook/portfolio, and
content of the module and/or submission of your assessments; contact your module
lecturers for these matters.

Similarly, do not contact your lecturer(s) about school placement and/or TP admin-related
queries. You will find these details in the Tutorial letter 102.

2 COMPULSORY REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHING PRACTICE

The table below contains the compulsory requirements for the Grade R teaching practice which are
non-negotiable. It must be completed in the year of registration for the module.

Please ensure that you read and understand the guidelines applicable to your teaching practice
modules. When selecting a school, please make sure that the school of your choice offers your
registered teaching practice subject/s in Grade R.

code If registered for two or more TP modules, you may not do Level
two teaching practice module placements at the same
time. This means the dates must be different.

TPG1501 5 weeks For this module, you are required to complete: 1st M L Maisela
5 weeks in Grade R

The teaching practice days:

You must complete your teaching practice in
• 5 consecutive weeks

Please refer to all other assessments (assessment 2, 3 and

4)

3 THE SCHOOL-BASED PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

• Teaching practice is a compulsory module, and no exception of any nature is provided
irrespective of the circumstances. Your registration for the Grade R Diploma means you
have accepted the rules and regulations of the qualification as well as the requirements
thereof for all the modules. Each TP module requires 5 consecutive weeks in a school
(refer to table above for more information)

• The lecturers and Teaching Practice Office are aware of the different terms of government
and private schools, as well as international schools. The teaching practice must be
completed within the timeline provided and as per the requirements specified by the
university.

3.1 Placement

• Assessment 1 requires the School Information form and Proof of placement.

If you don’t submit these two documents before the closing date, you will be blocked from
any further submission of portfolios. This assessment therefore also serves as
admission to the examination.

• All arrangements must be made at the beginning of the academic year. Immediately after
registration, you must read the relevant study material before any arrangements are made
with the respective school/schools where you are planning to do your teaching practice.

• It is compulsory to request permission from the principal of the school at which you intend
doing your teaching practice. Your study material (Tutorial Letter 102) and portfolio

4
TPG1501/ASSESSMENT 1/0/2025

requirements must be provided to the principal as proof of what is expected of you during the
five weeks teaching practice.
• Proof of placement is needed before you start your teaching practice.
• Complete the Online TPU tool on myUnisa or the respective links (Tutorial Letter 102) to
obtain proof of placement.

4 REGISTERED FOR MORE THAN ONE TEACHING PRACTICE MODULE

• If you are registered for two TP modules, no school-based placement may overlap or be
conducted at the same time. Ensure that the proof of placement form for each module
reflects the correct number of weeks.
• The Department Higher Education and Training requires 5 weeks for each TP year
module.
• Make sure you submit your portfolio within three weeks of teaching practice completion. Only
then can you start the placement of the second module you are possibly registered for. For
example:
 If registered for TPG1501 and TPG2602, each should be 25 independent days
 First do TPG1501 and submit your portfolio two weeks after completing your placement
at a school
 Then do TPG2602 and submit your portfolio two weeks after completing your
placement at a school.

Therefore, your online placement application must contain all the TP modules you have
registered for in your 2024 registration.
• Any student found conducting or completing teaching practice concurrently will fail to meet
the requirements.
• If, during 2025, a student attempts to do two TP module placements for 5 weeks instead of
10 weeks, only one placement will be recognized (based on the year level), which means one
TP module will have to be redone either before the closing date, or you must register again
for the following year to complete the TP module.
• All changes to placement dates and any related problems must be communicated with your
workstation/provincial coordinator at the Teaching Practice Office. The details are in Tutorial
Letter 102; you must read this tutorial letter carefully.

4.1 Monitoring of placement

• The TP office will monitor your placement.

• Any transgression of the placement requirements is against the DHET (Department of
Higher Education and Training) requirements, and you will not graduate.
• The proof of placement dates and the dates of the attendance register must correlate.

5
TPG1501/ASSESSMENT 1/0/2025

• All teaching practice portfolios must be submitted three weeks after completing the teaching
practice (TP) irrespective of the month in which you complete your TP. You will be penalized
for every week that your portfolio is late.
• No student is allowed to go to the school without proof of placement.

4.2 Abiding by the rules of the school

• The principal must be provided with all the requirements of teaching practice when you
request permission to do your teaching practice at the particular school.
• You must arrive in the morning when school starts and leave when the school day ends. No
special arrangements are allowed for individual students. You may not do one day or
alternative days a week; it must be consecutive days.
• You must complete your teaching practice at a registered DBE (Department of Basic
Education) school; TP placement at any home-schooling center is not permitted.
International schools must contact the placement office coordinator (Tutorial Letter 102).
• All changes to placement dates and related problems must be communicated with your
workstation/provincial coordinator from the Teaching Placement Office. The details are in
Tutorial Letter 102.

assessment 3 and 4, which are examination portfolios.
• This further means you will not be able to continue with your teaching practice and all
further submissions will be blocked.
• You will then have to register for the module again in 2026.
