SUB-SOIL INVESTIGATION REPORT

Construction of Teachers and Officers Dormitory

1. Introduction
Sub-soil investigation is a predominant feature in designing foundation of important structure
in an intelligent, economic and satisfactory way. It provides the necessary information of
strength and compressibility characteristics of the sub-soil to the design engineer for selection
of suitable type and depth of foundation for the proposed structure. Both the results of field
and laboratory investigations are essential to obtain necessary information in this regard.
Consultancy Research and Testing Services (CRTS), Department of Civil Engineering,
Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), Khulna, performed the sub-soil
investigation at the proposed site for the “Construction of Teachers and Officers Dormitory
under the Project of Expansion of Infrastructure and Academic Activities of Khulna
University of Engineering & Technology”. The investigation comprises soil boring, field-
testing, soil sampling, and laboratory testing. Sub-soil investigation for this site consists of
the execution of five (05) numbers of borings, up to a depth of 200ft. The fieldwork was
conducted from 28th August to 7th September, 2019. This report contains the relevant data,
bore-logs, drawing and graphs as well as the soil stratification and very tentative
recommendation about the type of foundation. Details of information that have been obtained
from the aforesaid sub-soil investigation and analysis of the data are provided in the
following articles.

2. Client and Project

Project Director, Expansion of Infrastructure and Academic Activities of Khulna University
of Engineering & Technology, Khulna is the client of the aforesaid sub-soil investigation
work. The name of the project is “Construction of Teachers and Officers Dormitory under the
Project of Expansion of Infrastructure and Academic Activities of Khulna University of
Engineering & Technology”.

3. Scope of Work
i. Drilling of exploratory borings, BH1 to BH5, up to the depth of 200ft from the
existing ground surface to determine the sequence and depth of each stratum.
5
ii. Execution of Standard Penetration Test (SPT) generally at 5 ft intervals up to
required depth.
iii. Collection of disturbed and undisturbed soil samples for subsequent laboratory
tests and visual classification.
iv. Measuring ground water table in each borehole.
v. Execution of various laboratory tests with the collected samples to determine the
geotechnical properties of the soil.

4. Field Works
Field works consist of five (05) numbers of exploratory borings (at the locations shown in the
site plan, as suggested by the client) maximum up to 200ft depth below the existing ground
surface. The land is approximately flat and each boring includes the following field works:
i. Standard penetration test (SPT)
ii. Collection of disturbed samples
iii. Collection of undisturbed samples
iv. Field classification of soils
v. Recording of ground water table (GWT)
vi. Sealing of undisturbed samples by wax

4.1 Exploratory Boring

A total number of five (05) exploratory borings were drilled down to a maximum depth of
200ft below the existing ground surface. The boreholes were drilled by wash boring method
with the help of a manually operated rig using a four (4) inches (100 mm) diameter cutter.
Bore logs are enclosed in this report (Appendix A), representing the sub-soil stratification.

4.2 Standard Penetration Test (SPT)

Standard penetration test, developed around 1927, is currently the most popular and
economical means to obtain subsurface information (both on land and offshore). This test
provides a fair knowledge about the relative density or consistency of the subsoil layers. It is
known that most of the conventional foundation design in Bangladesh is made using the SPT.
This method has been standardized as ASTM D 1586. SPT test is performed at regular
interval of 05 ft up to required depth of boring. The test consists of driving of split spoon
sampler of 1.375 inches (35 mm) inner and 2 inches (50 mm) outer diameter and 2 ft long by
a standard 140 lbs (63.6 Kg) hammer using 30 inches (762 mm) free fall a distance of 18 inch

6
into the soil at the bottom of the boring. The number of blows necessary to drive the sampler
the last two 6 inch distances (total=12 inch) is recorded as N number. For the project site, the
N-values are shown in the bore-logs with corresponding depths (Appendix A).

4.3 Collection of Disturbed Soil Samples

Disturbed soil samples were extracted during standard penetration test generally at every 5 ft
interval from each borehole. These samples were collected and duly preserved in polythene
bags and labeled with detailed job designation (borehole number, depth and date) for
subsequent tests.

4.4 Collection of Undisturbed Soil Samples

Undisturbed soil samples were collected by means of thin walled sharp-ended 3 inch
diameter Shelby tubes from different depths. The depth corresponding to the undisturbed soil
samples are shown on the bore-logs. These samples were collected and duly preserved with
detailed job designation (borehole number, depth and date) for subsequent tests required for
this sub-soil investigation.

4.5 Ground Water Table (GWT)

The ground water table in each borehole was recorded. It was measured when the water in the
completed boring became stable (not before 12 hours). During this period the bore was
protected from any physical disturbance. The recorded ground water tables are also shown on
the bore-logs. The groundwater levels indicated in the boreholes are an indicator of the
ground water level at the time of the test with specific hydrologic conditions. As these
conditions vary widely based on the time of year and precipitation, fluctuations in
groundwater conditions are expected.

4.6 Field Classifications

The disturbed soil samples, which have been collected in the field, were thoroughly examined
and classified roughly (type and color) in accordance with ASTM D 2488 (see Appendix A).

5. Laboratory Works
In addition to visual examination in the field, important laboratory tests on collected soil
samples from different soil strata have been carried out in the laboratory in accordance with
ASTM standards to evaluate the important soil parameters. Laboratory works consist of the
following important tests:

7
i. Moisture content test (ASTM D 2216)
ii. Specific gravity test (ASTM D 854)
iii. Unit weight of cohesive soils (ASTM D 2937)
iv. Atterberg limit test (ASTM D 4318)
v. Unconfined compression test (ASTM D 2166)
vi. Consolidation test (ASTM D 2435)
vii. Sieve analysis test (ASTM D 421 and D 422)

6. Sub-soil Stratification
The sub-soil investigation as represented in the five bore logs (see Appendix A) and test
results reveals that the sub-soil consists of following soil layers described in Table 6.1.
Table 6.1: Soil Stratification

Layer Depth (ft.) N-value Predominant Consistency and

no. From To Min. Max. soil type plasticity/Compactness
I 0 160 2 159 Clayey SILT Soft to Hard with low to high
plasticity
II 160 200 98 252 Silty SAND Very dense

From the results of the executed boreholes, it can be seen that the sub-soil stratification
differs slightly from each other, however, this difference can be neglected from the
engineering point of view and a general soil profiles for the site can be suggested as above.

7. Physical and Engineering Properties of Soil

The physical properties (unit weight, specific gravity, and Atterberg limits) and engineering
properties (compressibility and shear strength parameters) were evaluated by performing
different laboratory tests on soil samples. Undisturbed samples were used for consolidation
and unconsolidated un-drained unconfined compression tests. Some typical plots representing
the laboratory test results are enclosed in this report (Appendices B and C). Detailed test
results of physical and engineering properties of soil samples collected from the boreholes are
furnished in Table 7.1 to 7.5 in the following pages.

8. Correction of SPT Values

As the confining pressure in the soil increases with depth, the penetration number of
cohesionless soil at shallow depth is underestimated and that at greater depths is
overestimated. When the N-value at a depth corresponding to an effective overburden
pressure of 1 tsf is considered to be a standard, the N-value is required to be corrected. For
uniformity, the N-values obtained from the field test (Nf) have been corrected as N' according
to the correction factor (CN) estimated from the established equation (Ref. Peck, Hanson
&Thornburn, 2nd Edition, eqn5.3)relating with effective vertical overburden pressure
( , ):

= 0.77 (8.1)

Moreover, in saturated, fine or silty, dense or very dense sands, the N-values may be
abnormally great which because of the tendency of such materials to dilate during shear
under un-drained conditions. Hence, in such soils, the results of SPT tests should be
interpreted conservatively when the values of N' exceed 15 using the recommendation given
by Terzaghi and Peck (1967):
N =15 + 0.5 (N'-15) (8.2)
Where, N is the final corrected SPT values and N' is the SPT after correction due to
overburden pressure.

However, the evaluated SPT after corrections according to the above formulae are
summarized in the following Table 8.1.

The N-value gives useful information with regards to consistency of cohesive soil and
relative density of cohesionless soil. These relationships are given in the Tables 9.1 to 9.3 for
cohesive and cohesionless soil respectively.

10. Bearing Capacity for Shallow Foundation

The recommendation for the allowable bearing capacity to be used for design is beased on the
minimum of either (i) limiting the settlement to a tolerble amount and (ii) the allowable
bearing capacity, which considers the soil strength, as computed in the following sections.

10.1 Cohesive soils

To estimate the net-ultimate bearing capacity of spread footings in cohesive soils, the well-
known equation proposed by Meyerhof (1963) as given below can be used
= 5.14 (10.1)
19
Where, c= unit cohesion, = 1 + 0.2( / ), = 1 + 0.2( / ), D=depth of footing,
L=length of footing and B=width of footing. The net allowable bearing capacity of spread
footings is given in Fig. 10.1 to Figure 10.5.

11. Bearing Capacity for Pile Foundation

Foundations, preferably, piles are considered to transmit heavy load from superstructure to
deep and hard strata. As the formation of soil strata consists of cohesive and non-cohesive
type, the evaluation criteria for the determination of skin friction and the end bearing
capacities of piles also vary. Details of the evaluation are provided in the following sub-
headings.
Cohesive soil:

For the soils in cohesive group, i.e., for clay and plastic silt, the skin friction and the end
bearing capacities of square or circular pre-cast driven pile may be evaluated by the following
general formulae.

fsu= cu (11.1)

qpu = Nccu (11.2)

Where, fsu = ultimate unit skin friction.

= adhesion factor (Table 11.1, Ref. Peck, Hanson &Thornburn, 1973)

22
cu = undrained shear strength.

qpu= ultimate unit end bearing of pile.

Nc= bearing capacity factor for deep foundation=9.

Non-cohesive soil:

For non-cohesive soil of non-plastic silt, fine to medium sand, the skin friction and the end
bearing capacities of pre-cast driven pile may be evaluated by the following formulae,
suggested by Meyerhof (1976).

fsu (tsf)= N/50 ≤ 1 (11.3)

qpu(tsf) = 0.4N(Ls/B)≤4N (11.4)

Where, fsu = ultimate unit skin friction

qpu= ultimate unit end bearing of pile

N=corrected N-value
Ls= depth of pile into granular stratum, which is the pile length in homogeneous cohesionless
soils
B =pile width or diameter

Based on the above formulae and using the corrected N-value, the allowable unit skin friction
(Table 11.2) and end bearing capacity (Table 11.3) of driven pile foundation have been
estimated.

12. Conclusion and Recommendation
The sub-soil exploration has been performed at the Proposed Site for the Construction of
Teachers and Officers Dormitory under the Project of Expansion of Infrastructure and
Academic Activities of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology. Five bore holes up
to the maximum depth of 200ft from the existing ground level were drilled. Based on the
information obtained from sub-soil investigation both in the field and laboratory, it may be
concluded that the sub-soil predominantly consists of clayey silt soil up to the depth of 160ft,
from the existing ground surface and silty sand soil is encountered up to the bottom of the
borings, which should be considered while selecting a suitable type of foundation to support
the structure.

In this site, for the construction of low-rise building, spread footing may be used using proper
ground improvement measures (e.g. sand/PVD drains with preloading). If the soil below the
shallow foundation for high rise building cannot carry the super structural load without
failure and with the resulting settlements being tolerable for that structure, the foundation
engineer may decide to place the super structure on pile or piled raft foundations that
penetrate through the clay soils to deeper strata. However, finally, the assigned consultant
engineer has the responsibility of the geotechnical and structural design of foundation system
for the structure.

13. Disclaimer
Recommendations given in this report are restricted to the locations and up to the depths till
which investigations have been conducted, as the soil investigations have been carried out in
the site chosen by the clients so as to represent the entire site.
