INSTRUCTIONS
1. This paper consists of sections A and B with a total of fourteen (14) questions.
2. Answer all questions in both sections, section A carries six (6) marks for each question
while section B each question carries ten (10) marks .

3. All necessary working and answers for each question must be shown clearly .

4. Mathematical tables may be used.


5. All communication devices, calculators and any unauthorized materials are not allowed
in the examination room.

6. Write your examination number on every page of your answer sheet (s) or
booklet(s).

SECTION A (60 Marks)
Answer all questions in this section

1. (a) Given that y varies jointly with x and with the square root of z, and that y = 2
when x = 1⁄8 and z = 1⁄4. Find ;
(i) A formula giving y in terms of x and y .
(ii) The value of y when x = 3⁄8 and z = 1⁄9.
(b) Given that y is inversely proportional to the square of x and that when x = 1.5,
y = 8. Find the value of y when x = 2√3.

2. The diameter of a circle (in mm) drawn in a design are given below

Calculate the standard deviation and mean diameter of the circles.

3. (a) Find the co-ordinates of the point which divides the join of (5,-4) and (-3, 2)
internally in the ratio 1:2
(b) Find the equation of a circle with centre on 2x + 3y – 7 = 0 given that it cuts
x2 + y2 – 10x – 4y + 21 = 0 and x2 + y2 – 4x – 6y + 11 = 0 orthogonally

4. (a) Find the equation of a point which moves so that its distance from the point (4, 0)
is twice its distance from the line x = 2
(b) A line L passing through the point (-3, 4) is parallel to the line 16x – 4y = 25. Find
the equation of the line L

5. (a) (i) Find the remainder when 8x3 – 4x2 + 6x + 7 is divided by x – 1.


(ii) If ∝ and 𝛽 are the roots of the quadratic equation x2 – 3x – 5 = 0. Find the
quadratic equation that has roots of ∝ - 3, 𝛽 – 3

(b) Fatuma’s age is four times the ages of Juma. Two years ago their ages were 36
years. Find their present age

6. Draw the plan, front and side elevations of the following figure using the first angle
projection

7. (a) Find the solution of 2sin2x – 3sinx + 1 = 0 in 0° ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 360°

(b) A kite is flying at a height of 60m above the ground. The string attached to the
kite is temporarily tied to a point on the ground. The inclination of the string with the
ground is 60°. Find the length of the string assuming that there is no slack in the
string

8. (a) Determine if a number 19151 is divisible by 11

(b) If a cow produces its first calf when it is 2 years old and if from the third year it
produces a calf each year. Assuming that you are starting with a full mature cow
today how many cows will you have after 10 years if all produced calves turn out to
be cows? (i.e. No bull calf is produced during the period)

9. (a) Prove that PV (q ʌ r) [(pVq) ʌ (pvr)] is tautology

(b) By using the laws of algebra of propositions prove that (p ʌ~q) ~q is


tautology

10. (a) Simplify the expression A ∩ [(𝐵 ∩ 𝐴)′ ∪ 𝐵] using the laws of algebra of a set

(b) In a survey of 25 students, it was found that 15 had taken mathematics, 12 had
taken Physics, 11 had taken chemistry, 5 had taken physics and chemistry, 9 had
taken mathematics and physics, 4 had taken physics and chemistry and 3 had taken
all the three subjects

Find the number of students that had taken


(i) Only chemistry
(ii) Physics and chemistry but not mathematics

SECTION B (40 Marks)

11. (a) Find the possible value of P if the equation x 2 – 3x + 2 = P (2x – 5) is a perfect

13. (a) Evaluate when n = 6 and r = 2

(b) How many words can be formed using all the letters of the word EQUATION using
each letter exactly once?

(c) (i) Two dice are thrown. Find the probability that the sum of the numbers in the
two dice is 10 given that the first dice shows six
(ii) A bag contains 5 green 4 violet and 7 orange balls. Three balls are drawn at
random. Find the probability of that all of them are green.

14. (a) Solve the system of equation by using matrix method


y + 2z = -8.
x + 2y + 3z = -14.
3x + y + z = -8 .

(b) Show that the angle between the vectors 𝑎 = 𝑖 - 2𝑗 + 3𝑘 and 𝑏 = 3𝑖 - 2𝑗 + 𝑘 is


given by cos -1 (5⁄7).

(c) (i) Find the vectors whose length is 3 and which is perpendicular to each of the
vectors 𝑎 = 3i + j – 4k and 𝑏 = 6𝑖 + 5𝑗 - 2𝑘.
