ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to extend my sincere and heartfelt
thanks towards all those who have helped me in
making this project. Without their active guidance,
help, cooperation and encouragement, I would not
have been able to present the project on time.
I also acknowledge with a deep sense of reverence,
my gratitude towards my parents and other faculty
members of the school for their valuable suggestions
given to me in completing the project.
ACTION PLAN
This project, called "Crimes and Criminals,"
looks into what causes crime, how it affects
society, and how criminals can be brought
back into the mainstream. We conducted
research, a public questionnaire, and
studied the Koodathai cyanide killings to
understand these issues better. The project
focuses on the need for preventing crime
and treating criminals with understanding
to help them change.
The research for this project was carried out
using various tools and methods. These
included surveys and questionnaires to
gather public opinions, case study analysis
for an in-depth understanding of real-life
crimes, and secondary research from
articles and online resources to collect
relevant data and statistics.
The project incorporates Audio-Visual Aids,
such as pie charts, to present the data
collected from the survey in a clear and
visually engaging manner. These aids help
in effectively communicating the findings
and making the analysis more accessible.

INTRODUCTION
Selma Lagerlöf’s The Rattrap is a story
that talks about crime, human weakness,
and the transformative power of
kindness. The story is about a poor
peddler who sells rattraps but also steals
small things to survive. He believes that
life is like a big rattrap, where people get
trapped by greed and material things. His
crimes come from his poverty and
hopelessness, not because he is truly evil.
But his life changes when he meets
someone who shows him trust and
kindness, which makes him realize his
mistakes and become a better person.
As depicted in The Rattrap, crime is not
merely a violation of law but also a
reflection of deeper personal struggles. It
also shows that even people who commit
crimes can change, that they are not
always beyond redemption, if they are
treated with compassion. This story
reminds us how empathy and
forgiveness can reform even the most
hardened individuals, and instead of
judging them harshly, we should try to
understand them and give them a chance
to improve. It teaches an important
lesson about forgiveness and humanity.

CIRCUMSTANCES THAT LEAD TO

CRIME

Crime is primarily the outcome of multiple

adverse social, economic, cultural and
family conditions. To prevent crime it is
important to have an understanding of its
roots.

Circumstances that lead to crimes:

1. Increase in criminal opportunities
2. The widening Gap between the rich and the poor
3. A decline in the number of police officers
4. More media portrayals of violence

CASE STUDY
The Koodathai Cyanide Killings (2002–
2016):

The Koodathai cyanide killings refer to a

shocking series of murders in Kozhikode,
Kerala, where Jolly Joseph, a middle-aged
homemaker, poisoned six members of her
family over 14 years to gain property and
financial control. The murders came to
light in 2019 after a relative filed a
complaint suspecting foul play in the
deaths.

Jolly used cyanide-laced food and drinks

to kill her victims, including her husband
Roy Thomas, in-laws, and other family
members. Each death was initially
dismissed as natural or accidental.
However, inconsistencies in autopsy
reports and a forged will led to a detailed
investigation. Jolly confessed to the
murders, revealing a calculated plan to
inherit family property and maintain
control over her life.

This case highlights the manipulation and

premeditation behind the crimes, as well
as the delay in uncovering the truth due
to familial trust. It shocked the nation and
underscored the importance of thorough
investigations into suspicious deaths.
She was arrested in 2019 and charged
with multiple counts of murder, among
other offenses. The case is currently in
the trial stage at the Kozhikode Additional
Sessions Court. Jolly's bail pleas have
been rejected, and she remains in
custody awaiting trial.
In January 2024, the Kerala High Court
rejected her bail plea, citing that granting
bail could pose a threat to the
administration of justice.

CORRECTIVE MEASURES
Rehabilitation of offenders
This is a system designed to give guidance and
assistance to those who have committed crimes or
those who have turned to juvenile delinquency so
that they can become sound members of the society
while spending normal social lives; the system is
carried out in cooperation with the nation and the
volunteers.
Various corrective measures we have in India are
open prisons, concept of parole, probation, prison
labour etc. education in prisons are also provided.
For example-
1.Fundamental academic designed to provide the
intellectual tools needed in study and training, and in
everyday life.
2.Vocational education, designed to give training for
an occupation.
3.Health education.
4.Cultural education.
5.Social education
IMPACT OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOUR
ON SOCIETY
Criminal behavior profoundly affects society,
leading to economic burdens, psychological trauma,
and social instability.
Crime imposes significant financial costs, including
expenses related to the criminal justice system,
property damage, and lost productivity. Victims may
face medical bills and income loss, while
communities experience decreased tourism and retail
sales due to safety concerns. These economic strains
can hinder societal development and divert resources
from essential services.
Exposure to crime can also lead to mental health
issues such as depression and anxiety among victims
and the broader community. The pervasive fear of
crime can diminish quality of life, fostering a
climate of mistrust and social fragmentation.
High crime rates can erode community cohesion,
leading to decreased property values and a desire
among residents to relocate. This destabilization
hampers community development and can
perpetuate cycles of crime, as weakened social
structures struggle to support preventive measures.
In summary, criminal behavior detrimentally affects
society by imposing economic costs, causing
psychological distress, and disrupting social
harmony. Addressing these challenges requires
comprehensive strategies that encompass law
enforcement, community engagement, and social
support systems.

HOW TO BRING THEM INTO

MAINSTREAM
One of the most powerful tools to bring criminal
behavior into mainstream discussions is through
the media. Television programs, documentaries,
and movies that address crime can be used not
just for entertainment but also for educating the
public. Media coverage can help highlight the
complexities of criminal behavior, including the
social, economic, and psychological factors that
contribute to it. By portraying criminal behavior
accurately and responsibly, the media can
stimulate meaningful conversations about crime
prevention, rehabilitation, and societal
responsibility.
Education plays a vital role in shaping people's
understanding of crime. By incorporating
discussions of criminal behavior, its causes, and
consequences into school curriculums, students
can gain a deeper understanding of these issues
from a young age. Classes on social studies,
psychology, and law can all provide platforms to
explore criminal behavior in a thoughtful and
informative way.
Finally, government policies and initiatives from
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a
key role in bringing criminal behavior into
mainstream discussions. Governments can
introduce policies that focus on rehabilitation,
crime prevention, and education.

ATTITUDE OF SOCIETY TOWARDS

CRIMINALS

The attitude of people towards criminals often varies

depending on the individual, their personal
experiences, and societal factors. Some people may
approach criminals with sympathy, seeking to
understand the circumstances that led to their
criminal behavior. Others may view criminals with
disdain and believe they deserve harsh punishment.
Ultimately, the attitude towards criminals is
influenced by a complex interplay of factors
including compassion, fear, and the desire for
justice.
One prevailing attitude towards criminals is the
belief that they are products of their environment.
Those who hold this attitude may advocate for
rehabilitation rather than harsh punishment,
believing that giving individuals a second chance
can help break the cycle of crime.
On the other hand, there are those who view
criminals as inherently bad or evil. This attitude
suggests that individuals who commit crimes are
fully responsible for their actions and must be held
accountable.
Individuals who have had direct encounters with
crime, such as being a victim or witnessing criminal
behavior, may develop a more negative or fearful
perspective.
In conclusion, the attitude of people towards
criminals is complex and multifaceted. While some
may advocate for compassion and rehabilitation,
others may prioritize punishment and accountability.
A balanced understanding and focusing on both the
safety of society and the potential for redemption, is
crucial in shaping effective criminal justice policies.

Crimes and Criminals: Understanding Causes,
Impacts, and Solutions

Crime is a significant issue affecting societies

globally, leaving a profound impact on individuals
and communities. This research delves into the
various dimensions of crime, including the
circumstances that lead to criminal behavior, the
societal effects of such behavior, and the corrective
measures that can be implemented to address it.

One of the primary focuses of the research was to

identify the circumstances that lead individuals to
commit crimes. It was observed that economic
disparity, particularly poverty and unemployment,
plays a pivotal role in pushing individuals toward
offenses such as theft, fraud, and burglary.
Dysfunctional family environments and histories of
abuse also emerged as significant factors
contributing to criminal behavior, often fostering
aggression or emotional instability.

An important aspect of the research was examining

society’s attitude toward criminals, especially those
who have served their sentences. Stigma and
ostracism often hinder the reintegration of reformed
offenders, pushing many back into criminal
activities. With the help of awareness campaigns and
showcasing success stories of reformed individuals
we can shift public perception and create a more
supportive environment for reintegration.

In conclusion, crime prevention and rehabilitation

require a collective effort from governments,
communities, and individuals. By combining
preventive measures, effective rehabilitation
programs, and societal acceptance, we can move
closer to creating a safer and more inclusive future
for all.
REFLECTION

Working on this project was both engaging and

enlightening. The process of researching crimes
and criminal behavior provided a deeper
understanding of the complex factors that
contribute to crime. Conducting the public
questionnaire was a unique experience, as it
allowed us to interact with diverse individuals
and gain insights into societal perspectives on
crime, punishment, and rehabilitation.
Analyzing the data from the survey, including
creating pie charts, enhanced our analytical
skills and understanding of public opinion.
Overall, the collaborative nature of the project
fostered critical thinking and research skills.
