Tutorial-5-AR

This document is a tutorial assignment from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Jammu, focusing on solid mechanics problems related to buckling, stress, and deflection in various structural elements. It includes multiple problems involving different materials and geometries, requiring calculations of maximum axial loads, critical buckling loads, and stresses under various conditions. The assignment has a submission deadline of April 27, 2025, and is overseen by Dr. Arvind Kumar Rajput.

CE1-02(TO): Solid Mechanics
Tutorial (Assignment): 5

Submission Deadline: 27/04/25 Instructor: Dr. Arvind Kumar Rajput

1. The A992 steel tube has the cross-sectional area shown in Fig 1. If it has a length of 15 ft and
is pinned at both ends, determine the maximum axial load that the tube can support without
causing it to buckle.

Fig.1 Fig.2

2. Determine the critical buckling load for the column. The material can be assumed rigid as
shown in Fig.2.
3. The column with constant EI has the end constraints shown in Fig 3. Determine the critical
load for the column.

4. The hollow red brass C83400 copper alloy shaft is fixed at one end but free at the other end.
If the eccentric force P = 5 kN is applied to the shaft as shown in fig 4, determine the maximum
normal stress and the maximum deflection.
5. The tube is 0.5 in. thick, is made of aluminum alloy 2014-T6, and is fixed connected at its
ends as shown in fig 5. Determine the largest axial load that it can support.

6. A thick cylindrical pipe of internal radius 150mm and external radius 200mm is subjected to
an internal fluid pressure of 17.5 N/mm2. Determine the maximum hoop stress in the cross-
section. What is the percentage error if it is determined from thin cylinder theory?
7. A spherical shell with internal diameter 320mm and external diameter 640mm is subjected to
an internal fluid pressure of 75N/mm2. Find the hoop stresses developed at 40mm interval
across the thickness.
8. A thin cylindrical shell of 1.2 m in diameter and 3 m length has a metal thickness of 12 mm.
It is subjected to an internal fluid pressure of 3.2 MPa. Find the circumferential and the
longitudinal stresses in the wall. Determine the change in the length, diameter and volume of
the cylinder. Assume E = 210 GPa and µ = 0.3
9. Find the thickness of metal necessary for a steel cylindrical shell of internal diameter 150 mm
to withstand an internal pressure of 50 N/mm 2. The maximum hoop stress in the section is not
to exceed 150 N/mm2.
10. A cylindrical pipe of diameter 1.5 m and thickness 15 mm is subjected to an internal fluid
pressure of 1.2 N/mm2. Determine: the longitudinal stress developed in the pipe, and the
circumferential stress developed in the pipe.
11. A 40-kN load acts on a short column of rectangular cross-section 80 mm x 60 mm at a point
which is 30 mm from shorter side and 15 mm from longer side. Find the maximum tensile and
compressive stresses in the section.
