Inductive Approach

The inductive approach involves forming general theories from specific observations, often used in qualitative research to identify patterns. Key steps include observation, pattern identification, and hypothesis formulation. An example is a researcher interviewing teachers to uncover themes related to classroom challenges, leading to the development of a theory on educational obstacles.

Inductive approach involves developing general theories or conclusions

based on specific observation or data. It is often associated with qualitative

research, were the aim is to explore and allow patterns or themes to emerge
naturally from the data.

According to Thomas (2019), the Inductive approach is used “for condensing

extensive and varied raw text data into a brief, summary format ,
establishing clear links between evaluation or research objectives and
summary findings”.

Steps in the Inductive Approach

1.Observation

2.Pattern identification

3.Formulation of hypotheses or theories.

Example in research

As stated by Bryman (2020) a researcher interviews a group of teachers

about classroom challenges. After analyzing the transcripts, themes like
“lack of resources”, “large class sizes”, and “students motivation” emerge.
From these themes, the researcher inductively constructs a theory about
major obstacles in education.
