ISC Class 12 Chemistry - Chapter: Solutions

Maximum Marks: 50 Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Level: Average (AVCG)

Section A - Very Short Answer (1 x 5 = 5 marks)

Answer all questions. Each question carries 1 mark.

1. Define mole fraction.

2. What type of deviation from Raoult's Law is shown by acetone and chloroform?

3. State Henry's Law.

4. What is the van't Hoff factor for K2SO4 in water assuming complete dissociation?

5. Write the relation between elevation of boiling point and molality.

Section B - Short Answer Type I (3 x 5 = 15 marks)

Answer any five questions. Each question carries 3 marks.

6. Distinguish between ideal and non-ideal solutions with one example each.

7. A solution is prepared by dissolving 5 g of a non-volatile solute in 100 g of water. The vapor pressure of

pure water at 298 K is 23.8 mm Hg. The vapor pressure of solution is 23.4 mm Hg. Calculate the molar mass

of solute.

8. Define molarity and molality. Which of the two changes with temperature and why?

9. A 1.0 molal solution of a non-electrolyte in benzene freezes at 4.3 degrees C. The freezing point of pure

benzene is 5.5 degrees C. Calculate the depression in freezing point and the value of Kf.

10. What are colligative properties? Name any four.

11. Write the mathematical expression for Raoult's Law in a binary solution and explain the terms involved.

Section C - Short Answer Type II (5 x 2 = 10 marks)

Answer any two questions. Each question carries 5 marks.

12. Derive the relation for osmotic pressure using the ideal gas equation.

13. Explain the graphical representation of vapor pressure vs mole fraction for (a) ideal solution and (b)

non-ideal solution.
14. The freezing point of a solution containing 2 g of benzoic acid in 25 g of benzene is found to be 1.62

degrees C. The freezing point of pure benzene is 5.5 degrees C and Kf = 5.12 K·kg/mol. Determine the molar

mass and discuss whether benzoic acid undergoes association in benzene.

Section D - Long Answer (1 x 10 = 10 marks)

Answer any one question. Each question carries 10 marks.

15. (a) State and explain Raoult's Law. How does it help in determining molar mass? (5 marks)

(b) A solution contains 4.0 g of polyvinyl chloride in 100 g of water. It shows an osmotic pressure of 3.0

atm at 27 degrees C. Calculate the molar mass of the polymer. (5 marks)
