BSE- ENGLISH II – 1 LD Talks

When Did I Start Speaking English?

How did you learn English? It is one of the first questions asked
whenever I speak in English. My first encounter with the English language
relates to how other people first learned the language through watching
television. Growing up, I was exposed to English television shows every
day like: Barney and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Through watching those
shows I learned how to speak English. English was my first language
because when I was young, my parents tried to communicate with me in
other languages like Pangasinan and Filipino. I could not understand what
they were saying until my mom asked me a question in English that was
when I responded to the words she was saying. Growing up, I always felt
different than the other children around me probably because English was
my first language. Because of having difficulty speaking Filipino or
Pangasinan, my parents decided to enroll in a private school so that I
could learn how to communicate with people. During my preschool days, I
remember being introduced to the Filipino language but I had difficulty
understanding it at that time.

During my elementary days, I struggled with my grammar in

English. Although I struggled with my grammar in English, my
performance in Filipino was much more terrible than how I performed in
English subjects. I struggled with grammar in English because I wasn’t
taking my English classes seriously than my Social Studies subject which I
became fond of. That is where my love for English deteriorated.

During my high school days, my parents’ salary could not support

the tuition fee of my old school which is why I studied in a public school for
high school. English started becoming much more interesting especially
when I took Anglo – American literature in Grade 9. I remember being
interested in reading Romeo and Juliet or memorizing the Seven Ages of
Man both works that were created by William Shakespeare. Grade 9 was
the time when I also struggled with Social Studies.

As I reached senior high, I questioned myself about where would I

study for college. At first, I thought of taking Psychology but I also thought
of becoming an English teacher or a Social Studies teacher. Then,
Pangasinan State University opened its doors for applications for incoming
students. I decided to apply for PSU Bayambang with my first choice
being a Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English. The day of my
entrance exam came, and I thought that I wouldn’t even make it to the
next round knowing that I missed some questions in the test and at the
same time the pressure that came with it. When I found out I qualified for
the interview for my course I felt ecstatic. The day of my interview, I still
felt nervous, but I told myself English was your first language, and it is
what makes you different. After my interview, I did feel nervous especially
after not answering what is the meaning of the poem “Fame is A Bee”.
When the results of who were qualified for PSU came out. I told myself;
being different pays of.

To sum up my speech, whenever you feel different from others

because your first language is different be reminded that what makes us
continues to define who we are as a person, and in the end, it can also
lead us to the career God has planned for us to take. So, what makes you
different?
