OF MICE AND MEN

WHAT WILL WE BE
DOING IN THIS UNIT?

The Great
Depression
The Great Depression
began in 1929 and
ended in 1933 in the
United States, but
affected the entire
world. In many
countries, the
Depression extended to the late 1930s.
President Herbert Hoover was blamed for
many of the hardships people suffered
during the Depression, and President
Franklin D. Roosevelt implemented
economic measures to help banks and
increase employment.

Racism
While reading Of Mice
and Men, we will need to
contend with the racism
that was omnipresent in
writing of the time and
with racism that John
Steinbeck inserted into
his work to portray specific character traits.
This book includes repeated use of
inappropriate language, which may be
uncomfortable for students. We will be
discussing this language before reading the
book, and students will be expected to
adhere to certain rules, with consequences
including being removed from the
classroom if necessary.

"To a Mouse"
The title Of Mice and Men
is an allusion (do you
remember what an
allusion is? We'll be
reviewing it in class!) to
Robert Burn's poem "To
a Mouse." Of Mice and Men follows George and Lennie as they search for work in
