PHRASES AND ITS TYPES

What is a Phrase?
➢ A phrase is a group of words within a sentence
that make a sense but not a complete sense.
➢ A phrase cannot stand alone because it contains
neither a subject nor a predicate.

• Example:
I saw a joker in the street.
The sun rises in the east
I will met you at the bus stop.
A phrase can function as a noun, adverb, adjective
and preposition.
On the basis of their functions and constructions,
phrases are divided into Noun phrase, Adverb
Phrase, Adjective phrase, Prepositional phrase,
verb phrase,
Types of Phrases
1. Noun Phrase:
❑ A Phrase that acts like a noun, called a noun
phrase. It contains a noun and other associated
words which modify the noun.
Noun Phrase=
Optional Modifiers+ Noun + Optional Modifiers
Noun Phrase (answer of what)
Examples:
➢ Early to bed is a good habit.
➢ A woman in the window shouted for help.[subject]
• A noun phrase includes noun –a person, place,
or thing-and the modifiers that distinguish it.
Examples
• He hopes to win first prize.
• To win a prize is my ambition.
• We enjoy playing cricket
Here are examples:
1. The shoplifted pair of jeans.
Pair = noun; the, shoplifted, of jeans =
modifiers.

1. A cat that refused to meow. Cat = noun; a, that


refused to meow = modifiers.

2. A great English teacher. Teacher = noun; a,


great, English = modifiers
• Noun phrases function as subjects, objects, and
complements:
1. The shoplifted pair of jeans caused Nany so
much guilt that she could not wear them. The
shoplifted pair of jeans = subject.
2. Jon adopted a cat that refused to meow. A cat
that refused to meow = direct object.
3. With her love of Shakespeare and knowledge of
grammar, Jasmine will someday be a great
English teacher. A great English teacher =
subject complement
Pick out noun phrases from the
following sentences:
1. His father wished to speak to the
Headmaster.
2. Horses prefer living in dark stables.
3. He denies stealing the money.
4. He dislike having to punish his servants.
Answers
1. His father wished to speak to the

Types of Phrases
2.Adjective Phrase:
❑A group of words does the work of an adjective.
or
❑A phrase that acts like an adjective in a sentence
is called adjective phrase. Like an adjective, it
modifies a noun or a pronoun.
Examples:
1. A kid on the roof is looking at the sky.
2. A boy in the shop is my friend.
1. (a) The vizier was a wealthy man.
(b)The vizier was a man of great wealth.

2-(a) The magistrate was a kind man.


(b)The magistrate was a man with a kindly
nature.

3-(a) The chief lived in a stone house.


(b) The chief lived in a house built of stone
Examples
of Adjective Phrases
1. He is wearing a nice red shirt.(modifies shirt)
2. The girl with a brown hair is singing a song.
3. He gave me glass full of water.

A prepositional phrases and participle phrases


also works adjective phrase so we can also call
them adjective phrase when they function as a
adjective.
Pick out Adjective phrases, in the
following sentences:
1. A man in great difficulties came to me for
help.
2. A stitch in time saves nine.
3. A friend in need is a friend in deed.
4. He is person of very considerable renown.
Answers:
1. A man in great difficulties came to me for

Types of Phrases
3.Adverb Phrase:
❑A phrase which acts like an adverb is called adverb
phrase. It modifies a verb in the sentence.it consists
of adverb or other words (Preposition, noun, verb,
modifiers) that works like an adverb. An adverb
phrase work like an adverb to modify a verb, an
adjective or another adverb.
Adverb phrase is answer of when, where,why,how.
Examples:
1. The kid sat beside her mother.
2. He drives a car in a very high speed.
Adverb and Adverb phrase
1. (a)Rama ran quickly.(How?)
(b)Rama ran with great speed.(How)
2-(a)He answered rudely.(How)
(b)He answered in a very rude manner.(how)
3-(a)He is coming now .(When)
(b)He is coming at this very moment.(when)
4-(a)The arrow fell here.(Where)
(b)The arrow fell on this spot.(where)
Examples

1. He always behave in a good manner.


2. They were shouting in a loud voice.
3. She always drives with a care.
4. He sat in a corner of room.

• The above phrase (in a good manner) is


prepositional phrase but act like a adverb
phrase
Pick out Adverb Phrases in the
following sentences:
1. She lived in the middle of great wood.
2. Nothing can live on the moon.
3. They sat for a while on the bank of the river.
4. Honesty is written on his face.
5. The child replied with perfect.
Answers
1. She lived in the middle of great wood.
2. Nothing can live on the moon.

Identify phrase type:

1. He speaks too fast to be understood.
