Cerita Narrative
One day, a cat and a fox were having a conversation. The fox, who was a conceited creature, boasted how
clever she was. "Why, I know at least a hundred tricks to get away from our mutual enemies, the dogs," she
said.
"I know only one trick to get away from dogs," said the cat. "You should teach me some of yours!".
"Well, maybe someday, when I have the time, I may teach you a few of the simpler ones", replied the fox
airily.
Just then they heard the barking of a pack of dogs in the distance. The barking grew louder and louder - the
dogs were coming in their direction! At once the cat ran to the nearest tree and climbed into its branches,
well out of reach of any dog. "This is the trick I told you about, the only one I know", said the cat. "Which
one of your hundred tricks are you going to use?".
The fox sat silently under the tree, wondering which trick she should use. Before she could make up her
mind, the dogs arrived. They fell upon the fox and tore her to pieces.
One hot day, an ant was seeking some water. After walking around for a moment, she came to a spring. To
reach the spring, she had to climb up a blade of grass. While making her way up, she slipped and fell
unintentionally into the water.
She could have sunk if a dove up a nearby tree had not seen her. Seeing that the ant was in trouble, the
dove quickly put off a leaf from a tree and dropped it immediately into the water near the struggling ant.
Then the ant moved towards the leaf and climbed up there. Soon it carried her safely to dry ground.
Not long after that, there was a hunter nearby who was throwing out his net towards the dove, hoping to
trap it in this way.
Guessing what he should do, the ant quickly bit him on the heel. Feeling the pain, the hunter dropped his
net and the dove flew away quickly from this net.
Long, long time ago, there was a hawk that fell in love with a hen. The hawk flew down from the sky and
asked the hen. "Will you marry me?" The hen loved the bravery of the strong hawk and hoped to marry him
but she said, "I can not fly as high as you can. If you give me time, I will learn to fly as high as you do then
we can fly together. "The hawk agreed. Before going away, he gave the hen a ring. "This is a proof to show
that you have promised to marry me," said the hawk.
In another case, it so happened that she had already promised to marry a rooster. Thus, when the rooster
saw the ring, he became very upset, "Throw that ring away at once!" shouted the rooster. The hen was so
frightened at the rooster's anger that the ring was thrown away immediately.
A few months later, when the hawk came, the hen told him the truth. The hawk was so furious that he
cursed the hen, "Why didn't you tell me earlier? Start from now, you'll always be scratching the earth and i'll
always be flying above to catch your children, "shouted the hawk.
The Legend of Surabaya
A long time ago, there were two animals, Sura and Baya. Sura was the name of a shark and Baya was a
crocodile. They lived in the sea.
Once Sura and Baya were looking for some food. Suddenly, Baya saw a goat "Yummy, this is my lunch,"
said Baya. "No way! This is my lunch. You are greedy" said Sura. Then they fought for the goat. After
several hours, they were very tired.
Feeling tired of fighting, they lived in different places. Sura lived in the water and Baya lived in the land. The
border was the beach, so they would never fight again.
One day, Sura went to the land and looked for some food in the river. He was very hungry and there was
not much food in the sea. Baya was very angry when he knew that Sura broke the promise. They fought
again.
They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya's tail. Baya did the same thing to Sura. He bit very hard until Sura
finally gave up and went back to the sea. Baya was happy.
In the past, there lived a young orphan farm in the northern part of the island of Sumatra. Syahdan, the
young man made his life from farming and fishing. One day while he was fishing he got a fish which was so
beautiful in golden brown. While he was holding it, the fish turned into a beautiful princess. The princess
was a woman who was condemned for violating the prohibitions and it would turn into a kind of creature
who first touched it. Because at that time the human touched it, then it turned into a princess.
Fascinated by her beauty, the young man asked her to be his wife. The application was accepted on
condition that the young man was not allowed to tell the origin of the princess who came originally from fish.
The young man agreed to this requirement. Having got married for a year, the couple got a boy but he had
a bad habit that he never felt satisfied while he was eating. He ate all the food.
One day the boy ate all the food that should be given to his father. The young man then so angrily said:
"basically you are the offspring of fish!" That statement by itself unlocked the secrets of his wife and broke
his promise.
Shortly afterwards, his wife and son magically disappeared. Suddenly in the land of their former footsteps
went out the springs which were very heavy. The water flew from these springs continuously and the longer
it happened the larger it would be. Finally, these springs became a vast lake. The lake is now called Toba
Lake
One morning there was an ant who wanted to find water. The ant goes around looking for water and finally
finds a river. On the edge of the river, ants are looking for ways to bring water to the nest. Then he tried to
take the leaves to make a container of water. But because the river flow was very heavy, the ant was
carried away by the river currents and almost sank.
Ants ask for help to be saved. Near the river there are pigeons who see ants in trouble. The dove picks a
leaf and throws it near the ant. He intends to help the ants through the leaves. Ants reach the leaves
thrown by pigeons. Not long after that the ants finally survived with the help of pigeons.
Ants also thank the dove. Then the dove went and perched on a tree. Soon there was a hunter who wanted
to shoot the pigeon. Seeing that, the ants want to repay the good of the dove by thwarting the hunter's plan.
When a hunter wants to shoot a dove, the ant immediately bites the hunter's feet. Then the hunting bullet
finally misses and can't hit the dove. Merpati also immediately went away from the hunter's place. Finally
the ants and doves survived the catastrophe that happened to him.
