The indefinite article (A/AN)


 with singular countable nouns mentioned for the first time - We have a cat and a dog.
 jobs, professions – She is a writer.
 some expressions of quantity – a piece of,
 frequency – once a week,
 exclamations - What + singular countable noun – What a lovely day!

The definite article (THE)


 with things we have mentioned before, or when it is clear who or what we are
referring to from the context - We have a dog. The dog is old. I’m going to the
supermarket. Do you want anything?
 superlative adjectives: He is the tallest man in the world.
 centuries – the 17th century
 things which are unique: The Queen,
 nationalities: the French,
 families – the Johnsons,
 adjectives to express groups - the homeless,
 parts of the day – in the morning,
 musical instruments – She plays the piano.
 surroundings, place around us, places in the city - the sea, the cinema, the park,
 with countries including the words States, Republic, Kingdom, Emirates: The United
States,
 countries which have plural noun as their names - the Netherlands,
