Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Boomlift Operation

1. Purpose

This SOP outlines the safe procedures for operating a boomlift (also known as an aerial work
platform or cherry picker) to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.

2. Scope

This SOP applies to all personnel authorized to operate a boomlift.

3. References

● Manufacturer's Operation and Maintenance Manual for the specific boomlift model
● Workplace Fall Protection Plan
● Work Permit System (if applicable)

4. Responsibilities

● Operator: Follows this SOP and operates the boomlift safely.

● Supervisor: Ensures operators are trained and understand the SOP. Authorizes work
permits (if applicable) and conducts pre-shift inspections.
● Spotter (if required): Assists the operator with maneuvering the boomlift and maintaining a
clear view of the work area and potential hazards.

5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

● Hard hat
● Safety glasses with side shields
● Work boots with good slip resistance
● High-visibility clothing (if required)
● Fall protection harness (if required by work plan or regulations)

6. Pre-Operational Inspection

● Daily: Conduct a visual inspection of the boomlift for any damage, leaks, or malfunctions.
Check all controls, alarms, and safety interlocks for proper function. Ensure tires are properly
inflated. Refer to the manufacturer's manual for specific inspection points.
● Weekly/Monthly: Perform more detailed inspections as outlined in the manufacturer's
manual, including fluid levels, safety devices, and tire wear.

7. Work Area Setup

● Site Assessment: Inspect the work area for overhead obstructions (power lines, trees),
uneven surfaces, and underground utilities.
● Ground Conditions: Ensure the ground is firm, level, and can support the weight of the
boomlift. Use outriggers on stable, level surfaces and set them according to the
manufacturer's instructions.
● Wind Conditions: Do not operate the boomlift in high winds exceeding the manufacturer's
specifications.
● Work Permit (if applicable): Obtain a work permit authorizing boomlift use for the specific
task.

8. Boomlift Operation

● Pre-Start Checks: Ensure all personnel are clear of the work area and boom path. Check all
controls and functions before starting the engine.
● Travel: Travel at slow speeds with the boom lowered and centered. Maintain a safe distance
from obstacles and personnel.
● Lifting and Positioning: Use the controls smoothly and deliberately. Extend the boom and
platform only as far as necessary for the task. Maintain a three-point contact with the controls
(two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand).
● Safe Working Load: Never exceed the boomlift's rated capacity for weight and outreach.
Ensure the load is evenly distributed within the platform.
● Communication: Maintain clear communication with the spotter (if required) and personnel
in the work area.

9. Work on the Platform

● Fall Protection: Use a fall protection harness with a secure lanyard anchored to a
designated point on the platform (if required by work plan or regulations).
● Exiting and Entering the Platform: Maintain three points of contact with the platform and
ladder while entering or exiting.

10. Shutdown

● Lower the boom and platform to the ground smoothly.

● Retract the outriggers (if used).
● Turn off the engine and secure the boomlift.

11. Housekeeping

● Inspect the work area for any tools or debris left behind.

12. Incident Reporting

● Report any near misses, injuries, or equipment malfunctions to the supervisor immediately.

13. Training

● All boomlift operators must receive proper training on safe operating procedures, fall
protection (if required), and the specific model they will be using. Training records must be
maintained.
14. Reference Documents

● Maintain readily available copies of the manufacturer's operation and maintenance manual,
this SOP, and the workplace Fall Protection Plan.

15. Revision History

● Include a table to track revisions made to the SOP, including the date, description of change,
and authorized person.

By following this SOP, boomlift operators can minimize the risk of accidents and ensure safe
and efficient work at elevated heights. Remember, safety is paramount. If you are unsure about
any aspect of the operation, stop work and consult with your supervisor.
