1. What are the advantages of electrical heating?
2. What are the properties that a good heating element material must possess?
3. What are the various reasons of heating element failure?
4. Name the various heating methods and explain resistance heating.
5. Explain pinch effect and skin effect. Compare the performance of Ajax Wyatt and coreless
furnace. State the application of the two types of furnaces.
6. Discuss the temperature control of resistance furnaces.
7. What is dielectric heating? How is this different from induction heating? Explain the factors on
which dielectric loss in a dielectric material depend.
8. Describe various factors on which choice of particular frequency depends in induction heating.
Also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of high frequency heating.
9. A low frequency induction furnace operating at 10 V in secondary circuit takes 500 kW at 0.5 pf,
when the hearth is full. If the secondary voltage is to be maintained at 10 V, estimate the power
absorbed and pf when the hearth is half. Assume the resistance of the secondary circuit to be
thereby halved and reactance to remain the same.
10. A 21 kW, 1-Φ, 220 V resistance oven employs circular nichrome wire for its heating element. If
the wire temperature is not to exceed 1227 °C and the temperature of the charge is to be 527 °C.
Calculate the size and length of wire required. Assume e=0.9 and radiation efficiency K=0.6.
What would be the temperature of wire when the charge is cold?

levels required is 8 lux, efficiency of lamps is 18 lumens/watt, beam factor is 0.4, maintenance
factor is 0.67 and waste light factor 1.2. Find the number of projectors required.

39. A train runs at an average speed of 50 km/h between stations situated 2.5 km apart. Train
accelerates at 2 km/h2 and retards at 3 km/h2. Find its maximum speed, assuming simplified
trapezoidal speed time curve. Draw the speed time curve for the run and also calculate the
distance travelled by it before the brakes are applied.
40. A locomotive of 100 tonnes can just accelerate train of 500 tonnes with an acceleration of 1 km/h2
up gradient of 10%. Adhesive weight of locomotive is 70% of total dead weight, tractive
resistance is 45 N/tonne and inertia is 10%. If this locomotive is helped by another locomotive of
130 tonnes with 100% adhesive weight, find out the following:
a. Trailing weight that can be hauled up the same gradient under same conditions
b. The maximum gradient provided the trailing hauled load remain unchanged

voltage is 600 V and resistance of each motor of 0.1 Ω, calculate the following:
a. The time during which the motors are operating in series
b. The loss in the rheostats during starting period
50. A train weighing 300 tonnes has its speed reduced from 80 km/h to 30 km/h while going down an
incline of 1 in 100 through a distance of 3 km by employing regenerative braking. Taking tractive
resistance of 4 kg/tonne and allowance for rotational inertia is 8%, calculate the kWh returned to
the line assuming an overall efficiency of 75%.
